Abby Norman is an author, curiosity champion, sublime podcaster and an overall loving and lovely internet presence.

Maybe you learned about Abby through her acclaimed debut book Ask Me About My Uterus or her curiosity-driven podcast Let Me Google That. No matter how you got here, though, if you follow her anywhere, you know two things about Abby: she's a fighter, and she loves her dog, Whimsy

This summer has been an especially tough one for Abby and Whim, leaving Abby too ill to work and Whim in need of surgery.

To quote Abby's recent Instagram post:

I am completely overwhelmed. For one thing, I'm not supposed to be driving. I'm also immunosuppressed and shouldn't be out and about. I’m stressed, not sleeping, and really struggling to care for myself.
I know there are many people worse off than us in need your compassion and I’m sorry to blather about all this, I just don't know where else to turn. I guess I’m just hoping someone will read this and have advice or a kind word for us ❤︎

We've all been on top of our Kind Words game, but if any of us are able to give anything at all monetarily, let's please step up for these two marvelous beings.

To quote Abby again: "People have suggested crowdfunding for a while but I find it so overwhelming and I'm also, admittedly, feeling it would be unfair to ask for help in that way when I have nothing to give in return."

The worth of each of us amounts to more than the tangible things we give to others. Abby's already given so much of herself through the words she's shared and the openness she's shown.

Let's throw some love back at her. Any amount you can give will probably be met with the level of gratitude that will make at least two people cry—in addition to helping one human and one pup survive and breathe a little easier.

Much love,

Whim had her post op appointment today and is healing beautifully! Of course her good health and low-stress recovery would not have been possible without all of you. It’ll be a while yet before she’s fully healed and she’s a bit sore from the suture removal and very long day of car rides...but thanks to all of your love and support, she has freed from her cone and cleared to return to chiweenie mischief! ❤︎

I am feeling hopeful about the year wrapping up quietly and cozily for both of us. Right now I'm focused on resting as much as I can, sorting out end of the year doctor's appointments and getting ready for Open Enrollment to make sure health insurance coverage gets squared tidily away. I'm dealing with some ups and downs, feeling frustrated some days...but having Whim back to her playful, cuddly, healthy self has been a balm to my sick days.

For those of you who don't keep up with us regularly but would like to, I have sort of pulled back from social media but Whim and I both frequently appear on Instagram and we'd love to keep up with you there!

All our love —and always and always our thanks,
Abby & Whimsy

Dear friends,

Whim is now one week post surgery and I’m happy to report she is already up to her old tricks. It’s proving very difficult to keep her down! She has to stay quiet and coned until her 14 day follow-up appointment (the day before Halloween) but it’s been so reassuring to see her vigor has started to reemerge! We also got the good news that her biopsy came back with nothing scarier than expected. Phew!

Admittedly, I have been having a hard time taking care of myself. I am certainly trying — in large part because I don’t want to let anyone down and make them feel as though their kindness has been wasted. Some days are better than others but I am taking a very serious look at my situation and trying to identify if there are specific things I could ask for in terms of practical help.

One of the biggest challenges for us both right now, but probably more so me, is the need to be very inactive. For me, it's to facilitate weight stabilization and reduce cardiac risk. So, for example, this winter I would like to find someone to help with chores and errands, but I am frustrated at the realization I am losing independence by doing so. I am trying to reframe asking for, and accepting, help as being less a failure and more a sign of growth. Much easier said than done!

BUT, as difficult as this has been, it would have been insurmountable without all of your support. I hope everyone can feel the depth of our gratitude — we are both motivated to get well and put out good things into the world in the spirit of paying back, or forward, the kindness you’ve shown and continue to show us.

All our love,
Abby & Whim

Friends, oh my! $10k?! We are overwhelmed and at a loss for words. For those of you who are here as a result of Gillian's EXTREMELY KIND TWEET OF SUPPORT (RIP my mentions and my HEART) — hi! Thank you for sharing and drumming up the additional support.

I never imagined in a million years that we would be so blessed. What's amazed me is that the majority of the 100 of donors are strangers. People I've never met but, many of you, feel as though you know me. Either through the book, the podcast, or maybe a mutual friend. Your kindness is no less heartwarming to me than that of old friends.

In this day and age it's easy to feel that the world is a mostly scary bad place and that people don't see, or hear, or care about your pain. From your messages, I think many of you know this feeling.

This experience has been about so much more than the relief that money can bring (or rather, buy, I suppose). It's restored my faith and strengthened it. Not just in other human lives, but in the value of my own.

If all goes well Whimsy will have surgery on Monday the 15th which is a weekend away. I will continue to post updates here for those who are interested!

I also wanted to let you know that we received the first payout today which paid for both Whim and my medications and took care of travel needs. We are so deeply grateful, relieved, and comforted by your kindness and generosity and our good fortune.

All our love,
A‍bby & Whimsy
