LOUD's next chapter: LGBTQ youth theater

Tax deductible

LOUD is a queer youth theatre ensemble. Ranging in age from 15-21, we co-create multi-disciplinary performance work to agitate, educate and inspire our community. Each week the ensemble meets to deepen their analysis of structural, interpersonal and internalized oppression through dialogue, workshops and creative activities. We utilize this information to generate writing, movement, lyric, song and theatrical material to build into a full length piece of theatre.

LOUD ensemble members are paid a stipend for their work with us. This is a best practice that we have adopted from the Pride Youth Theater Alliance, a national network of queer youth theater programs. We pay ensemble members because we believe their creative contributions have inherent value and we recognize that there is a huge lack of employment opportunities for trans and queer youth, especially youth of color, in New Orleans.

OUR HISTORY

In the span of five years, LOUD has produced four complex, challenging performances that have been witnessed by hundreds of people in New Orleans and around the country. We have toured our work to North Carolina and Tennessee and ensemble members have travelled to present at conferences in Orlando, Chicago, Denver and Kentucky. We have trained over 25 young people and our members have gone on to become leaders on their college campuses, in social justice organizations and in creative communities.

THE NEXT CHAPTER

In 2019 LOUD is entering a new chapter. We hired a new co-director, Cameron-Mitchell Ware, and a new company manager, Cash Huynh.

Cameron-Mitchell is a seasoned actor, producer and teaching artist. He helped us to re-vamp our curriculum with an emphasis on foundational performance technique.

Cash was a founding member of LOUD’s first ensemble. She just moved back to New Orleans after college and has already built out our carpool program and is strengthening our community outreach.

This year we also have a new group of apprentices who are brave, brilliant and brimming with enthusiasm. They are already creating work that makes us laugh and gives us chills. In May they will present an evening of new works at the New Orleans LGBT community center.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Funding for LGBT work in the South is extremely slim, especially for arts based work. We believe in the importance of shaping our own narratives and paying the young artists who tell these critical stories. Community support has always been and will always be a huge slice of our budget.

This year we are raising $6,000 to pay our apprentices, company manager and co-directors.
