On November 18th, 2016 my 6-week-old niece, Lorelai, was admitted to Morristown Medical Center with a fever and cold-like symptoms. It was later discovered that she had contracted Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This virus is common among young children but hit Lorelai especially hard since she was so young.
Their story: Lana ( 2.5 years old) and Lorelai ( 6 weeks) were showing severe cold symptoms for 8 days. My sister-in-law took both girls to their peditrican 4 times over the duration of those 8 days but was sent home. During the 4th visit, she had known both girls had RSV due to emergency hospital admittance with Lorelai. Again she was sent home, not even with antibotics, despite Lana's continuing fever and wheezing in addition to Lorelai's strained breathing pattern.
Within 24 hrs Lana had spiked a 103 fever, and Lorelai's breathing was extremely strained. Lana was rushed the hospital where she was found to have pneumonia. Lorelai was intubated and put into a sleep-induced state within 24 hours of admittance. My niece remained hooked up to a ventilator, feeding tube, catheter, and IVs in a unconscious state for 2 weeks while her body fought the virus. My sister-in-law and brother could not hold their child for the entire duration. Both of them stayed in the hospital with her, juggling back and forth their 2.5 year old between them and Lana's grandmother.
An average stay in the pediatric ICU can have a daily cost of $10,000 or more, especially in such specific circumstances. My sister-in-law, Christina, is a makeup artist and has had to give up multiple weddings/appointments to stay with her little girl. Even with medical insurance, the debt they are incurring is staggering and growing by the day.
