'London Rhymes' is a music project working with parents and their children under 2. A main focus of the project is writing NEW songs and rhymes. What this gofundme page is all about:
Our final project of the six that Youth Music funded back in 2017, is with the amazing Magpie Project that work to support families and under 5's in temporary accommodation in Newham. They are INCREDIBLE and do so much to provide support and friendship to families in the most challenging and vulnerable situations.
We're really excited to work together, singing and making new songs and sounds. We'd LOVE to be able to give them the same chance to hear the fruits of their labour and record some of the fabulous songs that will no doubt come out of this project... an experience that is inspiring and empowering for parents... so please help if you can!
What will happen if we raise the funds:
- London Rhymes musicians will record amazing songs written by Magpie Mums and babies, in a professional recording studio.
- One or two of these songs will be animated and will join the collection of songs due to be launched in the London Rhymes YouTube channel in March 2019.
A bit of background about 'London Rhymes '
Aside from the nursery rhymes we all know and love, the music out there for both babies/children and (importantly) their parents to listen to hasn't really moved on much, and any YouTube search for 'kids music' is enough to put you off your puree.
Singer, songwriter and early years practitioner Rosie started a pilot project in 2015 which was an experiment - what happens when you collaborate with parents themselves, to write the kinds of songs that they want to sing, that would be useful for them in everyday life, and which reflect their tastes and creativity?
The outcome was a load of fab, fun and beautiful songs and accompanying animations by artist Claire Fauche.
We wanted more! So, together with partners Creative Futures and Hackney Playbus , we secured funding from Youth Music to roll the project out in a number of London boroughs including Hackney, Newham and Southwark, in a range of settings.
So, in summary - this project is two-fold.
- Our amazing projects: Rosie and a supporting professional musician work in settings and work with parents and babies to create fresh sounds, rhymes and songs. Here's an image of us working with a parent a few months ago.
- Recording and animation: Giving these songs a life beyond the end of the project - allowing both the parents involved in the projects a chance to use and enjoy them, but also more widely. Parenting and music go hand in hand, and the issues and challenges we all face in the early days are fairly universal. We want to give them the visibility they deserve, and ultimately which will inspire and encourage parents to sing and make great music with their children.
