First, a little about Jerry. If you haven't already seen his smiling face around town or witnessed his absolute dedication to living a life of love and devotion to others- then let us be the first to tell you what an amazing man we have to call our friend. Jerry is selfless and has a way with making even strangers feel like family. Jerry moved here almost a year ago from Cooperstown, NY. As an avid traveler, Jerry spent many years out embracing the worlds beauty. He took pictures on his phone of the moments that touched his heart along the way. These pictures are also for sale - all profits will go towards medical efforts to save his life.
The #LIVELIKEJERRY campaign was created by friends and family of Jerry Colgate, a current resident of Charlottesville, VA. On the early morning of Sunday November 9th Jerry was walking home on Elliot Avenue. We believe that someone hit him with a car and fled the scene. Jerry was left to die on the side of the road.
We are looking for clues and any tips that we can find to spread light on what happened. Knowing Jerry, if he were conscious, he'd probably be happy with a simple apology. As a community we are reaching out for support. Jerry is facing an uphill battle and fighting for his life. He has a severe brain injury and has been medically induced into a coma. His family and friends are by his side but they need your help. Charlottesville we are asking for you to #LIVELIKEJERRY and show some love to one of our communities finest. Every penny counts. We have had a lot of victims and been through enough heartache as a town. Jerry is still alive and fighting. The world would be a better place if we all tried a little more to #LIVELIKEJERRY.
Thank you for acknowledging the money raised for Jeremiah “Jerry” Colgate. His friends are proud of the effort, hard work and personal donations made that resulted in the fundraiser's success. Community members from Charlottesville, Cooperstown and throughout Jerry's travels were able to come together in support of their friend to signify a strength against a selfish act made that late November night. If anything Jerry's story has sparked a heartwarming reminder of the power behind people from all walks of life joining together to give back to someone they loved. A private bank account was set up in the name #livelikejerry directly after his accident. That way all deposited transactions would be documented properly. Through Go Fund Me and other personal fundraisers facilitated by several groups of friends the #livelikejerry account has raised right around $18,312 dollars. (Although $19,324 was raised on “Go Fund Me” the site deducts a percentage of the profits depending on choice of payment ranging from 8%-10%.) The family made a remark in a recent article about how the money was not released to them in attempts to create speculation around the fundraiser #livelikejerry. We assure you that they are correct. Per recommendations of the doctors at UVA Hospital, decisions based on Jerry’s progress were not to be made until one year had passed. Therefore, as an organization, we attempted to allow proper time before determining the avenue of the fundraiser. In efforts to be financially responsible and protect the money donated by hundreds it is being deposited as a trust in his name. Parameters of this trust will be decided by a handful of Jerry's friends that were heavily involved in the fundraising process. As we patiently wait for Jerry to progress through this hard time we feel confident in our efforts and know that our buddy would be proud. We would like to thank everyone for their contributions and time spent facilitating fundraisers in the multiple communities. It is because of this tragedy that we came together. It is because of him that so many have decided to follow his footsteps and #livelikejerry.
First, we would like to recognize The Local for organizing and hosting the benefit dinner on December 8th. It is obvious to those outside of the restaurant business what a family network your company has created and the impact you have on the Charlottesville community. Your service at and outside of this event will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank MS Events for providing plates, glassware and a stove for them to use for the night! The following companies were gracious enough to donate food for the event: Seafood at West Main, Cavalier Produce, Standard Produce, and Timbercreek Organics. Our MC, Craig Hartman, did a fabulous job- he lead us through dinner in laughter while helping us to remember what this event was truly about. Jeff Gleason Photography also volunteered his time to capture the moment. We can't wait to share his pictures with Jerry one day and explain how everyone came together to support him in his time of need.
Last but not least- to the competing married chefs, Matt Hart and Melissa Close Hart. Thank you. For your time, your hard work, your preparation and your love. Although this was a competition between you two- we know that Jerry was the true winner. Your food, your talent, and your giant hearts did not go unnoticed. We feel sorry for the restaurants that have to compete with your cooking in the future and we can't wait to support your new business venture the way you have supported our friend.
This event helped us raise over $3000 which puts us a little over $18,000 so far in one month's time. From the bottom of our hearts and stomachs, we are thankful. The world is a better place when we all try a little more to #livelikejerry.

That picture above really made me laugh...Jerry drove that Frankenstein car all the way to Florida! That car sat in our driveway for a couple of months when he lived with us and attracted a lot of attention in our little neighborhood! Always up for a good laugh when you #livelikejerry!
Thank you, Gaviria Family and Jerry's family, for doing this for Jerry. It is so wonderful to see the love and support grow. A special thanks to you Kari for kicking it off.
Jerry! You're such a beautiful person! Neil and I are sending our love. Stay strong, bro. And remember, as you endure this, your own words of wisdom: "Life is good! The challenges are just part of the experience. Listen to some good music! Spread the love people!" See you soon. Love, Neil and Jaimi
