Little Johnny

Shortly after the abrupt and shocking death of rapper and community activist, Nipsey Hussle we interviewed a boy at the site of Hussle’s memorial outside The Marathon Store on Crenshaw and Slauson streets.

Johnny Davis approached me while I was reporting on my Facebook live page, “Leah Uko”. He asked to be interviewed about his friend, Hussle. I told him that would be alright as long as he could get permission from his guardian.

Johnny went and brought his mother, Bernesha Holliday over to us. She granted us permission to speak with Johnny who expressed his sadness over another senseless killing in his neighborhood.

I was still recording live on Facebook while conducting the television interview. At the end, Johnny asked how he could watch the story and mentioned he and his mother did not have a television at home.

Dozens of you asked me to rally for him to get a TV. Through social media, I got a hold of Johnny’s mother and found out they need much more than a TV.

A few years ago when Johnny was 6 (he is 10 now) his mother says he was walking in his neighborhood with friends when a driver accidentally hit him and kept driving. Johnny was hospitalized for a while and when released, his mother had to care for him. She took off work too many times to care for her son and ended up losing her job. Since then, she and Johnny have been living in temporary housing while she works at her new job to save up to find an apartment she can afford.

Before Nipsey passed, she says he was helping her figure out options for living. She had known Nipsey before his fame.

Bernesha gets off work and meets Johnny at his school every afternoon. They walk home to their housing. She says life has been hard, but her son stays positive and even makes good grades at school despite his circumstances.

I’d love to tell their story on the news, but I’d also love to help them since so many of you took an interest in his good heart.

They need food and savings for a down payment on first months rent more than a TV.

This is me asking for your help.

Sincerely,

Leah Uko
