Little Dot’s Surgery to Live

Dot started coughing shortly after Jake’s softball game this past Sunday. In the past, this would usually reside with some calming rest—however, this time was different. Dot’s breathing only got worse as the night went on. Dot was brought to the vet early Monday morning where she received some calming medicine, a shot of steroids, and an X-ray which revealed a collapsed trachea. Dot’s collapse was one of the worst the doctors had ever seen. Often times this can be medically managed, but Dot’s case was so severe, the vet did not know if she would live even a few hours without oxygen and surgical intervention.

She was referred just down the road to Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota where there happens to be a surgeon who is trained in the procedure Dot needs. It involves the placement of a mesh stent via sedation, a scope, and fluoroscopy. The procedure and hospital stay are already estimated to be at least $9000.

We thought carefully and deeply about it, and given Dot’s young age of only 2 years, we thought that it is only fair to give her the chance to live a full, and otherwise healthy, quality life. If you know Dot, you know the infinite amount of love, light, kisses and smiles she brings to all she meets—young and old, and even those that [once] claimed, “I’m more of a big dog kind-of person.”
