Fund Adult Literacy

Donation protected
The Literacy Council of Western Arkansas enables adult learners to read, write, communicate and calculate well enough to deal with the everyday requirements of life here in Fort Smith.  Volunteer tutors in one-on-one sessions aid adult students to learn basic reading, writing and math skills.  Volunteer tutors in group sessions facilitate English Language Learners to acquire communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing and then to go on to prepare for Citizenship. It is estimated that 13% of adults living in the Fort Smith area have serious functional literacy problems.

The Literacy Council is thankful to our private donors including United Way and Altrusa who have sustained us throughout the years.  Unfortunately, this year, our federal and state funding have been severely cut increasing our need to reach out for more private donations.  Our entire budget is less than $100,000 and we serve between 75 and 100 students each year.  We provide textbooks, testing, tutor/student matching and tutor training.  We maintain a low cost centrally located center at 300 South 11th Street just west of Towson.

If you have more time than money, we are also looking for tutors!  You can make a difference by assisting someone to read, communicate and calculate better!  Or if you have friends who need to learn to read and write in English be a link to enable them to learn.
