Since 1916 Wilkinsburg had a statue of Abraham Lincoln at the intersection of the Lincoln Highway (now Ardmore Boulevard) and Penn Avenue. The statue was made of sheet copper formed over a metal framework. Over the past 103 years the statue has suffered much damage from vandalism, aging and weathering, and is now distorted and corroded. It has been moved to the Municipal building, out of the elements and is displayed safely indoors. The metal has been repaired many times and is too fragile to be reworked again.
The Lincoln Highway was America’s first coast to coast road, built in 1913. The Lincoln Highway and Wilkinsburg‘s statue honor a remarkable 16th President, one who held the nation together during the Civil War, one who had the determination to free 3 million fellow Americans from slavery and who was assassinated just six days after the War ended.
The Wilkinsburg Historical Society is taking the opportunity to raise funds for a new bronze Lincoln statue for that historic location .
It’s a complicated process for an artist to create a figural bronze sculpture. It involves armatures, clay, artist talent, foundry casting, and the bronze itself to make a life-size statue of Lincoln. The estimated total cost is $65,000-$70,000 except the mandated structural engineer fee and any modifications to the existing pedestal. County and state grants don’t include statues in their eligible projects so we have turned to the generous GoFundMe community to help.
It is the hope of the Wilkinsburg Historical Society that everyone who cares about Lincoln’s legacy in Wilkinsburg be given the opportunity to participate. Together we can raise funds for a new statue of Abraham Lincoln to remind everyone of his ideals of equality for all, and government “of the people, by the people, for the people“.
