Earlier this week my niece went to urgent care and was diagnosed with a virus. The virus was improperly treated and rapidly worsened in just a couple of days. Thursday morning Lily was rushed to the ER experiencing multiple organ failure as her body tried to fight the virus. After both her kidneys and heart failed doctors performed an ECMO to keep her alive and to figure out what the initial cause was. The doctors have not been able to diagnose the initial infection and are instead focusing on treating the symptoms she has now. Lily's heart and lungs are functioning with the assistance of machines, but she has a long fight ahead of her. The full extent of her illness and recovery is not yet known. With both her mother, Elizabeth Thornton, and father at the hospital with Lily around the clock, any kind of financial assistance you can provide would mean the world to our family. We will keep everyone updated through GoFundMe and Facebook, please keep Lily in your thoughts and prayers.+ Read More
It has been a year since Lily died. Ultimately what killed Lily was a common fungal infection, but we still do not know the underlying cause of her original infection. My two daughters and I had to hit pause on our lives for Lily... We still mourn for her every second of every day, but life continues and does not wait for us. We have found support groups to be helpful in learning how to grieve but still go through life one day at a time. Any donations are still appreciated.
Lily passed away yesterday. It's difficult to put into words, so I'll keep this short. There was nothing the doctors could do, and there was no amount of fight Lily could have put up to prevent this. Unfortunately the condition of her immune system led to a fungal infection that could not be treated. She was the coolest kid I have ever met, and I will remember her that way. Thank you all so much for your kind words, donations, and shares. I will keep everyone updated through here concerning a memorial service.
Since Lily became ill we have had moments of relief, thinking everything would be okay, and we have had many moments where we thought we were going to have to say goodbye. In the most terrible of these moments Lily has proven that she isn't done, and she continues to amaze us. Since our last update we have better news: the doctors went in and removed a kidney, her spleen, portions of her intestines and stomach, and a portion of her liver. We were very worried but Lily tolerated the surgeries very well and we are very hopeful. The doctors have given her a trach so that she can speak to us, and have told us that her organs have not become worse since the surgeries. These are positives signs, but she is still very much in the woods. I have increased the campaign goal to reflect that we are expecting at least one organ transplant on top of Lily's rehabilitation concerning her amputation. Please keep Lily in your prayers, share, and donate if you can. Thank you all so much for your support!
Since our last update Lily's health has taken a turn for the worse. The doctors are struggling to pinpoint the initial cause as she is too weak to complete some of their tests, and at this point the damage done to most of her organs is catastrophic. The doctors are going to perform an ultrasound to see how much damage has been done to her stomach/GI tract and hopefully we get good news. However, recovery at this point is not going to look like we had hoped. Doctors are unsure of what a "recovery" at this point could look like exactly, but they are still working around the clock to take care of Lily. We thank you all for your continued support, and ask you to please keep Lily in your prayers.
