The Lighthouse Volunteer Program

Perhaps a picture of my beautiful, frolicking little girl seems out of place on this page. For me, it is a reminder of what we have, what every child should have, and what so many today do not.

For the last few days, I have talked in circles with my friends and family members concerning one of the worst humanitarian crises we have ever seen.

At the risk of sounding cliche, I will be honest: this morning, I talked with God about it instead.

While I am terribly guilty at times of making my politics personal, I realized early this morning that this ache in my heart is not about politics. It is about fellow human beings who need help. And I think we have the opportunity to help them.

I cannot in good conscience raise my daughter in a world in which I stood on the wrong side of history. If I do not respond to a call, I believe that is squarely where I would stand.

So, with the help of my incredible family (who will be caring for my four-year-old daughter, Sophie, and I'm certain will spread this campaign far and wide), I am travelling to Lesvos, Greece this December for two weeks to volunteer at a refugee intake camp.

My goal for this campaign is lofty. $3500 will pay for my plane ticket, room, and a rental car that will be used to transport supplies and volunteers for the two weeks I am on the island. It will also purchase immediate clothing needs (raincoats, warm clothes, and shoes) for 10 refugees. I plan to pay for my own food, weather supplies, communication, and ferries to and from the airport seperately. Anything we can raise above this campaign's goal will go directly to supplies on the ground; I will be posting links to amazonUK soon, as camps are in need of things such as collapsible stretchers and hand and foot warmers that can be sent directly to volunteers on the island. So that donations go directly to supplies for refugees instead of my baggage fees, this is how any excess funds will be spent.

My shifts in the camp will be spent organizing and handing out supplies, cleaning, expiditing paperwork, and transporting supplies and volunteers. I've prepared myself as best I can for the cold, hard fact that it will be heartbreaking. But the opportunity to spread light and love is so much stronger, and if even my meager past attempt at volunteering have taught me anything, it is that serving others will prove an even bigger blessing for me than it will for my brothers and sisters in need.

I need your help to get there. This is your opportunity to send an abassador of your own, to make a difference for a few stranded strangers. Of course I can promise pictures and postcards and updates each day I am there. But most importantly, I can promise to take your love with me across the globe and spread it in a very dark corner.
