Australian Light Horse & Field Artillery Museum Funding Appeal

Who in the Ex Service Community has not heard of the Famous Australian Light Horsemen and their Famous Waler Horses in the Battle of Beersheba, 31st October 1917 in Syria, in WW1, (99 years ago this Month).

Who in the Ex Service Community would not be aware of the Horses that pulled the Field Artillery Pieces in War. Also, very importantly; the other Animals of War, Dogs and Homing Pigeons, used on the Battlefields of France and Belgium, during the years of WW1.

Bernie Dingle has spent some 30 years putting together a Museum that houses an Incredible Display of Memorabilia of the Second Boer War and of WW1; very likely to be the largest collection in Australia.

This Display has artificial Horses, genuine Artillery Pieces and other Weapons of War, Wagons and Limbers, Cookers, Red Cross Wagon, a Field Hospital, Honor Boards from Well Know Businesses and Organizations of the period, and far too much more to ever explain here on this page.

It would not be a surprise to learn, that much of this Historical Memorabilia no longer exists today.

But that is not quite correct; as I can attest to the fact that a very large amount of this type of Memorabilia does in fact exist, at the Light Horse and Field Artillery Museum, at Nar Nar Goon North, about 76 klm East of Melbourne; set in Rural Surroundings and built of Rustic Barnlike Sheds – This is no Modern Museum by any standard, but it does reflect authenticity of the period the Memorabilia has come from and relates to. In fact this Memorabilia would look out of place in a Modern Museum.

I guess you are now going to ask; how can I visit and view this wonderful Museum Collection – Well sorry Folk; you cannot visit right now, because:-
Bernie Dingle’s Museum has been Closed Down by the local Shire Council, because they consider it does not meet the requirements of the existing OH&S laws and he no longer has any form of income. Nor can he afford to feed his wonderful Horses; the Horses that pull the Field Hospital Wagon and the Field Artillery Limbers, etc, at our Anzac Day Marches and other Military Related Parades and Functions where Bernie is asked to attend with his Troop and Equipment.

Many of us have concerns about the perceived OH&S requirements and cannot get our head around the need for his Blacksmiths Shop to have a Wooden or Concrete Floor, or a Smoke Alarm in the Blacksmiths Shop, etc, as examples.

What we do know is; this Museum has functioned in this condition for some Thirty (30) years, with no recorded incidents that relate to the Safety of his Public Visitors and can see no likely hood of incidents happening in the future.

However, we do agree the Museum probably does need an improved Water Supply and Fire Protection System, in case of Fire, as there is no reticulated water supply in this rural area; it will need to be by Tanks and Pumps.

With the above as a background, Bernie is appealing to the Public, Far and Wide, Australia and Overseas; to those of you who had Ancestors who Served in the Boer War and WW1, or later Conflicts, who have a love of Military History and Heritage, a love of Military Museums, a love of Military Memorabilia, or,  simply a love of Animals in War; to offer their Support for Funding the Recovery of the LH&FA Museum, to the extent of the Cost of OH&S requirements, which is in the order of some AUD$90,000, thereby enabling Bernie Dingle to open the doors of his Museum to the Public, once again, after having been Closed for some six (6) months or more.
