Life-saving surgery for Nickie

$1,065 of $3,000 goal

Who is Nickie?

Nickie Smith is a wonderful, loving wife to me and mother to our three children.  She brightens the room with her smile, tames our hearts with her voice, and enriches our souls with her heart.

Why does she need help?

Nickie has serious health issues with which she has been struggling such as:

-diabetes
-crippling back injuries
-arthritis in her knees

All are related to her weight. She has worked for years to lose that weight in every conventional way possible, but with her injuries and near-constant pain, she is unable to do the physical activities needed to lose the weight.

What surgery does she need?

Her doctors have strongly recommended bariatric (gastric bypass) surgery, not just to reduce her weight, but also to save her life.  However, our insurance does not cover this surgery and we cannot afford to pay for it soon enough for it to really help.

She will be turning 40 this coming year, and if she isn't able to get this surgery soon, we're afraid she won't live to see 50.  Won't see her children become adults, won't get to meet her grandchildren.

These are our children.  They want their mother to be around a long, long time:

Our goal

Our goal is to raise the money we need to pay for her surgery (and related procedures), in cash, before December 31, 2018.  If we can do that, she would hopefully be able to have the surgery before the end of 2019, greatly increasing her chances of living a long, fruitful life.

What will you be helping us do

We will use whatever money we can raise to pay for any procedures, appointments, and programs that aren't covered under our insurance, including the surgery and post-surgery procedures themselves.  Anything we can't afford out-of-pocket.

Thank you, and God bless for whatever help you can give.

Thank you all again for your help and your love! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

Next weekend (2/3/2018) Nickie and I have the “initiation” session to start her in the bariatric program. Yes, it’s starting to become a reality! I’ll keep you up-to-date on her progress as we go!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all who have donated and who have shared this with others!

We feel truly blessed that so many of you are willing to help give Nickie the chance to drastically improve her health and quality of life.

We are working to get the timeline for her program together, so hopefully soon I’ll have some more specific milestone info to post.

Upon some knowledgeable advice I've received, I'm reducing the goal to $3,000, which is 10% of the total expected cost (and which we can hopefully use as a down payment to get things started).

Thank you everyone who has forwarded this request, and a special thank you to everyone who has donated!

I just wanted to give a little more background info on Nickie's condition, and how it has led up to this request. 10 or so years ago, when her doctors first started telling her she needed this surgery, she was working for a company whose insurance DID cover the surgery. She went through the pre-screening process, including working with a nutritionist and a psychologist, to help her prepare.

During this process, she suffered a major back injury that essentially left her bedridden for several months, in near-constant and intense pain. Because of her weight, almost every doctor we spoke with refused to do anything for her except prescribe anti-inflammatory meds and tell her to "lose some weight".

Once we finally found a doctor who would actually examine her, he found that she had a bulging disk in her lower spine that was pressing on her spinal cord. He almost immediately ordered surgery to repair it, which finally relieved her pain and got her able to move around again.

However, because of the delay in treatment, she suffered permanent nerve damage (though thankfully not paralyzing).

In addition, because she was bedridden for so long, she lost her job and her health insurance (she hadn't yet been there a full year, and so was not eligible for FMLA). We enrolled in insurance thru my work, but my insurance didn't (and still doesn't) cover any bariatric procedures. She had to quit the program and was basically put back at step 1.

Ever since then we have tried, and failed, to save/raise the money we needed. In that time, she's had more health issues come up (in addition to re-injuries of her back), and we know there isn't much time left to get her the help she needs before it's too late to turn things around.

Thank you all for reading this, and for sticking by us during this difficult time. I will keep you updated as often as I can as to her condition, and how things are going in getting her back into the bariatric program.

God Bless you all!
