Life or Death Move

$1,795 of $2,500 goal

I'm chronically ill, and slowly dying of the same thing that killed my mother. I've been actively trying to get treatment in my city for a couple decades and the doctors here do nothing but gaslight me and give me referrals that take years, only to find out that they purposefully sabotaged them. Based on when other family members who had these symptoms died, I have about 10-12 very painful years left if I don't get diagnosed and get treatment. It's hard to say if treatment would prolong my life, but it would greatly improve the quality of my life (which is a higher priority for me.)

I've spent most of my adult life chronically homeless as well, but had finally found some stability for the last year or two. That is ending right now as well. I lost the disability income I was getting through welfare after a county security officer assaulted me and it became unsafe for me to go back to the welfare office. My housing was through my girlfriend who had a housing voucher but just lost it, and she doesn't have the income to cover our expenses without it. The landlord had refused to do repairs for years, and then we finally had called code enforcement - and now the landlord is trying to retaliate against us by a major rent increase. If we had a lot more time and energy than we do, we could fight it, but as it stands we both have too much on our plates to do anything other than just move.

And that's what I need help with. I don't know where I'd go if I stayed in town, and might end up homeless again if I did. Even if I could find a place in town, if I have to put in the extensive energy into moving anyways, I desperately need to move to somewhere that I have a chance to get medical care. Any other place in California has too high of a cost of living, and I can't afford an out of state move on my income. I am moving to where my Mom lives, in Virginia, so that she can help me with some things when I get there.

I'll be able to stay with Mom long enough to find a new place, but I need to keep that amount of time to a minimum. Mom lives in a townhouse, and the bedrooms and only shower is upstairs. I cannot safely climb stairs, so I'll be sleeping downstairs in the living room and will have to scoot up the stairs while sitting when I need to shower. That works on a very short term basis, but I will need a place of my own very quickly.

For the budget: It is cheaper to do the move without a moving truck or service, even with the things I'd need to replace. (This is a conclusion after comparing lots of options.) And the things I need to replace are things I cannot do without - I don't mind having to have my clothes in bags but for my medical situation I desperately need to have an electric bed. I'm not counting anything in this fundraiser that doesn't need to be replaced urgently.

Train - $240.30 - Need this amount by 3/14 to lock in the price.
Food on Train - $150
Replacing Vital belongings - $850
Shipment of Other Things - $300
Getting a new place $1200

So I'm putting the initial goal as $1,500 and if we can manage to make it to $2,700 that would cover everything.

My train leaves on 4/9/19. I need the amount for the train ticket by 3/14 to manage to lock in the price reservation, otherwise it could get more expensive.

The rate that my health is deteriorating, this is my only chance to get out of this city and get the medical care that I need. Any amount you can help out would make a lasting difference on my life.

Thank you.

Hi, all! The move, in the sense of literally getting myself safely across the US and to my Mom's house, went pretty well. Some bumps in the road, but that's to be expected.

Some great news? I got into my new primary care for the first time this week, and already have two referrals, including to a rheumatologist. It took decades to get that far in Fresno (and still would have taken years to get the first appt), but here it took one single appointment.

CN: child abduction, abuse (this paragraph only)
The big thing that was unexpected was being contacted by CPS shortly before I got on the train. I hadn't seen my kid in years after the ex abducted them, and with the courts refusing to help, I wasn't sure I'd ever find them again. All of my planned time frames and energy budgets have changed as a result of this, and I am trying to get my kid out of the CPS system and back into my home.

Because of this added stress, I'm finding it exceptionally difficult to manage working from home, which has made it impossible to move out of Mom's house. There are a few things that will help this, but the biggest one is getting some sort of office space to leave the house to go work on a schedule, away from all the stressors. Something about piles of intimidating paperwork doesn't contribute well to creativity.

So I've increased the amount of the fundraiser to get the boost I need to make the rest work. Once I get into an office space, I should be able to roll forward on my own.

I really appreciate every single one of you that has donated or shared this. Can I ask you to share (again? <3 ), or donate if you're able? Could you help me get established in this community where I can get the medical care I need?

See my pinned tweet (linked here) for most recent update. Sorry if the format is hard for some, but with my anxiety lately that was easier than writing it here. Much love to y'all.

Today is a recovering spoons day so my pace is almost non existent, but I definitely have good news!! The gofundme amount got fully funded today - thank you everyone who helped.

(The main reason I haven't been thanking people by name is I know a lot of people who are in my extended circles are trans and I don't want to risk that the app gives me the wrong name for you all, but each of you have made all the difference in my life.)

Since I've been in my Mom's house, I've already had some major things get better just by the differences in state. The bus drivers seem to have at least minimal training for hooking in wheelchair users, I can drink the water out of the tap here (not being able to caused major issues before), and I'm borrowing a much better wheelchair until I can get one on my own.

I've been apartment hunting, and have gotten a lot of "no accessible availability"s and a few "you don't meet the requirements", but I haven't looked at very much yet and am fairly sure it's doable. I'm hoping my spoons will be replenished enough to do some serious apartment hunting before the weekend.

I've been getting things sorted for health insurance, and it looks like I'll probably be insured at the beginning of May. I know where I'll be going for therapy and for trans health care / hrt already.

I'm in a bit of culture shock (we all knew I would be) but it's been a great thing so far. There doesn't seem to be the same level of apathy and hopelessness here, and I've made a few friends whom I suspect will become good friends. I've even found a job possibility for if I need to work for someone else part time while I get my self-employment up to pace, and if I take this job it would be one I could do from home.

I've got people helping me find furniture and household things that I needed to replace, and once I get a place the bed will be bought on a store card I have. So things are definitely coming together.

I'll put out a new update as soon as I find a place, and whether I'm okay to pay for it in full or not. Thank you all so much. <3

So some of you know that I have a chance to get my kid back in the very near future that I didn't know would be a possibility even when I started the process of this move. I can't go into a lot of details because my kid's privacy is important, but getting into a 2 bedroom apartment very quickly (within a week or two at most) will help this effort significantly.

This doesn't change the budget of the gofundme, just the urgency level and how many people are affected by it. If you're able to help or share at this point, I'd appreciate it immensely. And I certainly appreciate all those who have helped in any way up to this point - it wouldn't be possible without you all.
