Serpentine Community Farm

Serpentine Community Farm CIC (Community Interest Company) is a community growing space for vegetables and flowers in the centre of Buxton on a small site in the Serpentine Walks - opposite Pavilion Gardens. We have close links to Buxton Civic Association, Alderbrook Day Centre and a growing list of local organisations.

The main aim is to transform a run-down and derelict council nursery into a thriving area of local food production. It was set up by volunteers who wanted to learn new skills and demonstrate how to grow things in Buxton’s cold climate.

The site was first developed with the approval of the Council to clear the debris and scrub, to allow access and develop a community growing space. Since its inception, the site has welcomed volunteers accruing more than 15,000 volunteer hours, and helped to establish the growing space by installing two polytunnels, renovating the greenhouse, building a series of experimental raised beds, cold frames, and a spacious wheelchair-friendly composting toilet. The area is full of potential with existing buildings for workshops and meeting spaces.

The Farm remains under threat  as the current Council have plans to seek planning permission and sell the land.

The site is run by volunteers and opens to visitors on a Wednesday and Sunday between 11am and 3pm. The annual programme of regular workshops and special events is posted on our website:
