A Month of Letters
The Month of Letters is a simple challenge.
1. In the month of February, mail at least one item through the post every day it runs. Write a postcard, a letter, send a picture, or a cutting from a newspaper, or a fabric swatch.
2. Write back to everyone who writes to you. This can count as one of your mailed items.
The participants commit to mailing 24 items. Why 24? There are four Sundays and one US holiday. Write love letters, thank yous, or simply notes to say that you miss an old friend. Send a fabric swatch from a new dress. A feather you picked up while on a walk. Whatever it is, step away from the urgency of modern life and think about an audience of one. Think of it as sending 24 little gifts.
How did it begin?
In September 2010, I took a month off from the internet. During my vacation, I told people that they could correspond with me by paper letter. It was fun, so in 2011, I issued the challenge. I thought it would be small. I was wrong.
Why a fundraiser?
The Month of Letters Challenge has grown over the years to the point that I've had to hire people to help me run it. Last year, I actually tallied the amount of money it takes and, well... it's about $3000 per year.
This past year, I set up a Patreon, hoping that it would allow me to get the help I need, but it's juuuuust covering the costs of the existing site. It also requires managing so... I'm hoping that if each of the members donates just a little, that I can actually:
Hire a webmaster
Build an app, so you can play on your phone. With GPS mailbox quests and...it would be awesome.
Mail scholarships for people who want to play, but can’t afford stationary and stamps
A penpal matching system
Can you help?
