How often do we here the same horrifying story……we see it in the movies but don’t think it will happen to us?
You are fit fine and healthy, hardly sick a day in your life, you wake up with a small numb spot in your shin and within twelve months you are completely disabled.
This is what happened to this man. Gil Hiller, a man who is one of the most humble, placid and caring persons I know.
He is a devoted husband to his amazing wife Sonia, a doting Dad to his three beautiful daughters Maddison 17, Corinne 15 and Lyndsay 13.
What started as a small numb spot in his left shin was soon to take over his whole body. Gil was not responding to any medical treatments and his condition worsened. On the 31st December Gil took his last steps, he could no longer walk. He still remained positive because he still had the use of his hands but this was soon not to be the case either.
Gil’s original diagnosis was CIDP, a disease that destroys the nerves around the muscles. After months of no response to treatments and further tests, doctors confirmed Gil has POEMS Syndrome. He has recently undergone Stem Cell Replacement. The doctors are hopeful of some recovery but it will be a very long time with no prognosis at this stage.
His wife Sonia is an absolute rock and I have watched her battle this tragedy. Gil requires 24-hour care but Sonia is now the only income earner and has to continue working because the bills don’t disappear when someone gets sick. This is why I have decided to set up this Go Fund Me Page for the Hiller Family.
