As many of you know, I went to Ghana this summer for the first time in 16 years. I was able to meet my family for the first time ever and enjoy all that Ghana has to offer. While I was on this life-changing trip, I realized that life is too short, and whenever you have a chance to change someone's life for the better, you should take that opportunity by the ears and run with it! *press read more below!
This year I have decided to spend my year fundraising for an amazing church community in Accra Ghana, John Wesley Methodist Cathedral Church. This church welcomed me with open arms and I would like to give back to them! The church funds three main initiatives that impact greatly the lives of those in this community. I am hoping to raise $2,000 to support each of the following programs:
Free Health Clinic: This clinic offers assistance to church and community members free of charge. The most common illnesses people seek treatment for are malaria ,upper respiratory tract infections , colds , flu , coughs , sore throats , etc. The clinic also helps provide the following services:
Blood pressure checks and assistance
Blood Glucose checks and monitoring
Allergic Dermatitis care
Some Skin infections care( worm infections,eczema,rashes etc)
Provide first aid for burns care
Wound dressing
Health screenings
Education: The church runs John Wesley Junior High School. This school provides an affordable education for the more than 1000 students who attend. If students do not have access to an affordable education, they often forego education completely and end up working in the home or selling goods at the market. Curriculum includes English, French, local languages, math, integrative sciences, PE, creative arts, citizenship, and religious and moral education.
Athletics Program: This program takes kids of all backgrounds and gives them someone and something to rely on and look up to. The athletics program has three main sports: soccer (with 31 members participating), Volleyball (with 15 members participating) and basketball (with 19 members participating).
