Let's give Knox a chance at life

Our journey began in November with the sudden loss of our sweet dog Maisie, due to an aggressive brain tumor. We were devastated, but vowed once our hearts healed a little, we’d rescue another dog in need.

On Valentine's Day, we decided to go to the shelter in Voorhees to look at dogs. We had no specific age or breed in mind - we just wanted to find a dog we connected with. As corny as it sounds, we wanted a dog to choose us.

That was Blake. His head hung a little low and his movements were a little slow, but there was no question he wanted to come with us. He didn’t jump, he didn’t beg, he didn't even lick.

He sat down next to Jason, and pushed his head as hard as he could against Jason's leg. As Jason began to pet him, he burrowed between his legs. That was it. We filled out the adoption application to bring him home the next day.

The shelter said Blake came from Tennessee, so we christened him with a new name: Knox. Our Knox was lethargic, but he had just been fixed, so it was expected.

Those first few days, Knox had little appetite and developed a cough. We went back to the shelter to see their in-house vet, who prescribed oral antibiotics for kennel cough. But Knox refused to eat, meaning he never had any medication.

Knox made no progress the next day. We went to our vet Dr. Taylor at Grey Fox, who prescribed antibiotics and anti-nausea injections. We figured if Knox started eating, he could take oral antibiotics and be okay.

But by Friday we needed to do more. Knox’s appetite hadn’t returned, and his lethargy and coughing were worse. His breathing was very labored. We went to Red Bank Animal Hospital, where they took chest x-rays. Based on those images, they diagnosed Knox with severe bacterial pneumonia and admitted him instantly.

Knox has been through a litany of tests, IV’s, and more tests. All told, his medical bills are over $4500, and will continue to rise.

Knox has pet insurance, but we’re not sure how much it’ll cover him. Hopefully, we’ll get $1500 (the max payout on the plan). That leaves us with over $3000 (and growing) in debt.

We visited Knox today. We brought him homemade food. I asked the doctor if she had a prognosis, and she warned me I wouldn't like the answer.

She said: Knox’s chance of survival is unfortunately directly correlated to our funds. They *can* save him, but they understand if we can’t afford to fund Knox’s treatment.

Jason and I broke down. We can't quit on Knox. To know this dog is to love this dog. Knox is sweet, gentle, snuggly, and obedient.

Please, if you can donate even $1 to help save Knox, we would be so appreciative. He can survive this, and he deserves this. His first year of life has been full of parasites and bacteria and filth. But we have the opportunity to give Knox so much more: a full life of love, family, treats, and snuggles.

Will you help us save Knox?

Thanks for listening, and thanks for caring. <3
