Mants'ase Orphanage Lesotho

Donation protected
I am Leigh Vogel, a photographer based in Washington, D.C. This past February, I traveled to Mants'ase Children's Home, an orphanage in Lesotho, southern Africa, that provides temporary and last-resort care for 46 children (20 girls and 26 boys).

29 of the children are double orphans (lost both parents)
17 children are single orphans
8 are HIV Positive
2 have special needs

With the third highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in Africa, more than half of the 260,000 adults living with HIV in Lesotho are women, yielding a high rate of single and double orphans to be cared for in orphanages such as Mants'ase. While AIDS awareness is a priority, the children need support now.

The children and staff are so kind, smart, hard-working, and need funds now for basic necessities, and for continued education for the children. (The two little girls in the photo are two of three sisters that are living at the orphanage. I spent several days with them, and I think about them and all of the children every day. Though we speak different languages, they took me by the hand to show me through their worlds and I hope you will help me make their lives just a bit more secure.)

I was welcomed by the children and staff (who work around the clock for less than $200 per month), and was treated with such grace. I want to do my best to help raise funds so that these children have an easier time than they have experienced in their lives so far, and a future that includes education and job preparation. I plan to return to Mants'ase in the coming months, and am happy to send a 4x6 print of any photo to any person who donates more than $20. Here is an official list of what your money will help to provide. (Exchange rates vary, of course.)

• $10 will pay for meals and toiletries for a child for a week

• $50 will pay for clothing and shoes (excluding school uniforms) for a child for a year

• $100 will pay for petrol for our vehicle for a month

• $125 will pay the exam fees for a child to write the COSC exams (school leaving examinations) in Form E. (Cambridge Overseas School Certificate)

• $150 will pay a Housemother’s basic salary for a month

• $250 will pay for school and exam fees, school uniforms and school supplies for a year for a child in Form C

• Between $300 and $500 will pay for school and boarding fees for a year. The exact amount of fees depends on which High School Mants'ase can get the child enrolled in. The better the school’s academic record, the higher the school fees.

• $400 will pay for a Housemother’s additional benefits (excluding her basic monthly salary) for a year

• $500 will pay for meals and toiletries for a child for a year

I will also update anyone who wishes with the results of the funds that are raised.
