Irma destroyed our home & Le Santal

Hello, We are the Schroeders, from the US, and have  been visiting SXM for over 15 years. The Dupont family have become part of our family.  The loss of their restaurant, home, vehicle and all personal belongings-everything- is an incomprehensible  situation.  We are hoping this campaign can assist the family in rebuilding their life. Any funds raised will assist in the cleanup and rebuilding of their restaurant and home.  Al funds will be  withdrawn and sent to the family in France, where they are staying until they have the means to return.

HELP US REBUILD OUR HOME AND LE SANTAL

As you may know, Hurricane Irma struck St Martin and destroyed the entire island in one night. We lost our home and our mother’s restaurant. Sadly, we do not have any insurance because insurance companies did not want to insure a building this close to the sea.

Our parents first opened Le Santal years ago. It was one of the first restaurants on St Martin.  They always told us that they have three things they cherish the most: St Martin, French cuisine and of course family. The reason the restaurant was opened for years was because they were able to gather everything they love in one place: Le Santal. Le Santal was a restaurant proudly standing by the Caribbean Sea, a business ran by our parents to provide for us, their five children. Situated in Sandy Ground, by the sea, it was a gastronomic restaurant that succeeded representing French cuisine and the friendly spirit of our beautiful island St Martin. The building had a second floor and it was where we were living with our parents. In 2005, our father passed away, but we did everything for his dream to continue to shine: Le Santal was still standing strong, just like my mother and us by her side. After his death, she worked even harder so we can continue to live. She gave up on so much to see us grow up healthily, become good people, so we could go to university. Growing up, we started to help her more and more, and surely, we learned to love the restaurant as much as our parents did. How much joy we had to provide delight to every guest that ever walked through the door; it was always with so much happiness that we welcomed everyone. The five of us could never say that we lacked something in our life. We were not rich, and we still are not, but we could live with dignity. We had family love and the restaurant that provided us what we need to live, and that’s all we wanted.

Nevertheless, at the end of the summer, while we started to prepare everything for the season to come, Hurricane Irma destroyed in one night what our family has built. We lost everything that provides us the right to live. Le Santal and our home disappeared. The two places that were homes for so long are so gone now, destroyed, even not recognizable. 

Now that Le Santal is devastated, our mother cannot afford for the four cadets to go to university anymore. The eldest lost her job the same night since the company she worked for was also destroyed. As for the youngest, Saint-Martin’s high school did not open yet. Being really young, she is the most shaken by the thought to have lost so much.

However, the places may be ruined, but the dream is not broken. We spent sleepless nights crying on the loss, and more nights contemplating our worried and desperate mother that didn’t have a single clue on how to continue to provide for the five of us. Yet, we needed to stop the mourning to find a plan to rebuild the dream. Unfortunately, we cannot afford the reconstruction of the building (500k US dollars minimum). Moreover, living by the sea we have absolutely no insurance against natural disasters. We are going to do everything to rebuild the restaurant, each one of us will work to help to finance the rebuilding but it will not be enough.

This home is everything for us. Please every single dollar given can help.

Comme vous le savez sûrement, l’Ouragan Irma de catégorie 5/5 a frappé Saint Martin et a détruit l’île en une nuit. Nous avons perdu notre maison et le restaurant de notre mère. Malheureusement, nous n’avons aucune assurance car les compagnies d’assurances n’ont pas voulu prendre le risque d’assurer un bâtiment si proche de la mer.

Nos parents ont ouvert Le Santal il y a des années. C’était l’un des premiers restaurants sur Saint-Martin. Ils nous ont toujours répété que les trois choses qu’ils aimaient le plus au monde étaient Saint Martin, la cuisine française et bien sûr la famille. La raison pour laquelle le restaurant a été ouvert pendant de nombreuses années est parce que ils ont pu rassembler tout ce qu'ils aiment en un seul endroit : Le Santal. Le Santal était un restaurant qui se dressait fièrement au bord de la mer des Caraïbes, un business appartenant à nos parents pour nous soutenir nous leurs cinq enfants. Situé à Sandy Ground, face à la mer, c’était un restaurant gastronomique qui a eu du succès en représentant la Cuisine Française et l’esprit amical de notre belle île de Saint Martin. L’immeuble avait un second étage et c’était là où nous vivions avec nos parents. En 2005, notre père est décédé mais nous avons tout fait pour  que son rêve se poursuivre : notre mère a travaillé encore plus dur pour que nous puissions continuer à vivre. Elle a renoncé a tout pour nous voir grandir sainement, devenir de bonnes personnes et pour qu’on puisse aller à l’université. Nous ne pouvions jamais dire que nous manquions de quelque chose dans notre vie. Nous n’étions pas riche, et nous ne le sommes toujours pas,  mais nous pouvions vivre avec dignité. En grandissant, nous avons commencé à aider de plus en plus au restaurant, et nous avons appris à l’aimer autant que nos parents l’aimaient. C’était toujours avec joie que l’on accueillait chaque client qui passait la porte d’entrée. Nous avions l’amour familial que nous portions chacun l’un pour l’autre et le restaurant qui nous permettait de vivre et c’était tous que nous avions besoin.

Cependant, à la fin de l’été, pendant que nous commencions à tout préparer pour la saison à venir, l’Ouragan Irma a détruit en une nuit tout ce que nous avions construit. Nous avons perdu tout ce qui nous donnait le droit de vivre. Le Santal et notre maison ont disparu. Les deux endroits qui étaient nos maisons depuis si longtemps sont ravagés et méconnaissables.

Maintenant que Le Santal est détruit, notre mère ne peut plus supporter financièrement les trois cadets pour qu’ils puissent continuer leurs études. L’aînée a perdu son travail la même nuit depuis que l’entreprise où elle travaillait a aussi été détruite. Et pour la plus jeune, le lycée de Saint Martin n’a pas encore ouverte. Étant très jeune, elle est la plus bouleversée par les évènements et par l’état du Santal et de la maison.

En outre, ces endroits sont peut être ruinés, mais le rêve n’est pas brisé. Nous avons passé des nuits sans dormir, en pleurant nos pertes, et plus de nuits encore regardant notre mère, désespérée, qui n’a pas une seule idée sur comment peut-elle continuer à nous faire vivre. Pourtant, nous devions arrêter de pleurer la perte de nos biens et trouver un plan pour ressusciter le rêve. Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas les moyens pour réparer les dégâts qui sont beaucoup trop importants (500 000 euros au minimum). De plus, notre restaurant étant trop proche de la mer nous n’avons aucune assurance contre les catastrophes naturelles et nous devons donc nous débrouiller seuls. Chacun de nous va travailler de son côté pour rassembler les fonds pour la reconstruction mais ce ne sera jamais assez.
