Leif Rori's Story:
January 30th, 2017 the world welcomed a breathless baby boy named Leif Rorik Hansen. Due to unexplained oxygen deprivation during labor he suffered traumatic brain damage that has resulted in cortical visual impairment, global developmental delays, and cerebral palsy.
Leif spent his first several weeks in the NICU where we struggled to grasp the loss of the boy we expected while getting to know the boy we got.
Luckily for us, Leif is much more than his brain injury. He is rolls of cherub chub and endless cuddles. He is mellow and sweet and has uniquely intense listening skills. Leif loves the water, mylar balloons, and being sung to. He is a romantic that likes to greet his loved ones by stroking their face and offering kisses. He is a vessel of hidden intelligence waiting to be unleashed.
Born at 10lbs 6oz and over 23in long and now almost 40lbs and 3ft long at 15 mos, it is obvious that Leif is destined to move mountains. Now it is our job to make sure he receives the medical care he needs to achieve his full potential.
Why we need your help:
We cannot do this alone. No other time in our lives have we understood the importance of community so deeply. While every day with Leif is full of beautiful blessings, there's often confusion and feelings of helplessness as well. At 15 mos old Leif is not yet rolling, sitting up on his own, or crawling. He receives frequent therapies, but the majority of the time relies on his mother completely for exercise and opportunities to explore.
One of our biggest goals is to get mom trained in neuromovement therapy to practice at home and accelerate Leif's developmental progress. As his number one advocate and constant companion, no one is in a better position to work with Leif than his own mother.
Our remaining goals focus on treatments and procedures meant to rehabilitate Leif's traumatic brain injury, enhancing the brain's natural neuroplasticity. The necessary treatments include:
• Stem Cell Therapy
• ABM intensive therapy
•Cold Laser treatment
•HBOT
•Hippotherapy
•etc
• Adaptive Technology
-eSight glasses
-Lillie Nelson Little Room and Support Bench
-etc
The list of potential therapies goes on and all donations will go towards Leifs neurological reeducation. Please keep reading for some anecdotes of how these therapies have already helped change our lives for the better!
Leif loves ABM and he has learned more from neuromovement lessons than any other form of therapy. In the past five months since starting ABM Leif's head circumference went from the 10th percentile (borderline microcephaly) to the 50th. This is evidence of the millions of budding neural connections as we build his body mind understanding.
Leif has also gone from having highly spastic (meaning tightly contracted muscles due to misfires in the brain) hands/arms/shoulders to almost full mobility in those body parts. He is finally reaching for toys and learning to grasp objects.
We've seen untoward improvement in his eyesight. Once believed to be completely blind, Leif has begun to track objects and recognize faces.
ABM has given our family hope and a whole new understanding of the brain and it's potential to heal. Ideally we would have weekly ABM neuromovement lessons and monthly intensives to keep momentum in Leif's learning. Unfortunately this therapy is out of pocket and adds up to over a thousand dollars a month on top of the already heavy financial burden of having a special needs child.
Fortunately for Leif, we will do anything to make sure his needs are met. We hope that you will join us on our journey to a better life. You are sure to fall as deeply in love with him as we are.
