Leif Erikson needs repair/upgrades

Donation protected

You are awesome! We have now stopped taking donations as we have exceeded our goal and have now raised over $105,000 for our repairs which we hope to complete this coming summer in 2019! Tusen takk!

Leif Erikson Hall is the heart of the Norwegian-American community in Ballard/Seattle Washington. The building was finished in 1986 (as much as any building can be finished) and was built pretty much with 12,000 hours of volunteer labor and monetary donations.

Because the hall is thirty-one years old this year, it has many maintenance needs occurring simultaneously, and this is a major financial strain on building funds making it difficult to make timely needed upgrades and complete the repairs to keep the building functioning as needed.

The hall has served well in providing a home for the Norwegian community and the Ballard community at large. It provides space for community groups; men's and women's groups including a women’s chorus;  adult and children’s folk dancing groups; AA meetings; language classes, genealogy research; groups meeting in the building provide scholarships and grants to young people; community cultural events where food, crafts, dancing and music may be enjoyed; and hosts an open house to escape the rain or sun during the Syttende Mai parade, held each year to celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day.  It is a place to celebrate weddings, anniversaries and memorials. This building is an integral part of the lives of the Norwegian and Ballard community in Seattle.

The building needs to be improved, upgraded and have some major repairs done to continue to be a part of the vibrant Ballard community. Much of the repairs over time could be done by members, but now the skills to do these needed repairs belong to the licensed experts especially the dangerous areas on the roof and the exterior walls.
