Assuming Leif's cancer goes into remission, the next stage of the process is a bone marrow transplant. This will destroy his immune system for many months. During that time, he may be able to go home and start to creep back toward a normal life. But we've just discovered that our house is riddled with mold. Fungal infections are one of the deadliest complications of immunosuppression. For him, going home would be like crossing a minefield.
We've hired an industrial hygienist to help assess the problem, and we will have more information on what we need to do soon. But we know that fixing the issue will involve substantial construction, with expensive specialists in mold abatement.
So we've decided to increase the goal for this fund to defray the cost of that construction.

Leif is seven and has secondary leukemia caused by the chemotherapy he received at age two to treat bone cancer. Mary and Eric are in hospital with Leif during this initial month of chemo. This secondary cancer is extremely rare and statistics are not great. We do not know the chemo road map other than that the treatment will be long and hard. Leif has been a fighter all his life and has overcome a lot. We hope he will be able to beat this, too.
Right now we're unable to work, and the medical bills and living expenses will pile up as they did last time. It was very hard on our finances. But people were incredibly generous. We hate to ask again after that but any offer will help Leif and our family immensely. Thank you so much.
