Hello there, as those of you who know me are aware, I am a trans-masc person, this means that although I was assigned female at birth I am living as a non-binary person
I have been binding for 2-3 years at this point. Binding is wearing a special compression garment that flattens the chest, to help alleviate the dysphoria of having breasts. I wear this between 10-14 hours a day, which has meant that over the last few months I have had constant back pain, and recently developed rib pain as well. But I cannot function without binding. The depression, anxiety and just downright discomfort and alienation in and from my own body is too much when I am not wearing it. So about a year ago I asked to start the process to have surgery through the public system. This would remove the breast tissue and leave a more masculine chest.
The public waiting list for Ireland is 2 years, after you wait on the waiting list to see the person who can refer you, which effectively makes it 3 years. I have been moved back to the start of this, because the person I was originally referred to for assessment over a year ago stopped practising in this area, and I only found out through a trans support group. So I need to be put on a new waiting list. I cannot do this for another 3 years.
I have saved, and although it was not the original plan for my savings, I am going to have the surgery done in Poland, as this is the cheapest option with the best results. I am going to use a loan to pay for my flights, food and travel while there, my medical expenses and all the tests and assessments required before they will perform the surgery. But I do need help with accommodation. I will need to be there for 2-3 weeks for the pre- and post-op appointments, and before it is safe for me to fly home again. This is expensive, especially because I need to bring someone with me to keep an eye on me and help me while I recover in a foreign country.
The amount I am raising is very specific because it is the amount of the most suitable option for accommodation for that long that was quoted to me.
