Manistee County sheriff's deputies say a woman died after helping to rescue children caught in a river's current.
MANISTEE COUNTY, MI - A woman who helped children who were struggling in the Big Manistee River presumably drowned after she was found face down in the water.
Lee Dawn Mann, 33, of Mesick, died Wednesday, July 25, at the scene.
Sheriff's deputies said that children in the water began to struggle in the river's current when Mann went into the river to help. Witnesses said she managed to push the children to shallow water before she went under.
Others used a flotation device to reach Mann, who was face down, and pull her to shore where cardiopulmonary resuscitation was done. Emergency responders were unable to revive her, police said.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. on Big Manistee River near Upper River Road, south of Woodpecker Creek, on a power-line access road in Manistee County's Marilla Township.
