Youth campaign for the climate

From the 16th to the 17th of November, the youth will take action for the climate. This will be the second year that a ‘Local Conference Of Youth’ event is organized in the Netherlands. The goal of the 2-day event is to mobilize young people, make them aware of urgent climate issues, and discuss their influence and impact on nature.

Why?

The climate is one of the most important themes for the upcoming decades. We want to ensure that the sustainable developments goals agreed upon by politicians are achieved. It is crucial for us and for our children to ensure a healthy planet.

Global warming, the influence of the climate and changing weather patterns are important matters to us. By getting in touch with each other and taking matters into our own hands where possible, we want to make a positive contribution to making the world better. In order to increase our impact, we want to reach as many young people as possible. We have received permission from YOUNGO, the official youth representative of the UNFCCC, to organise this event.

What does a ‘Local Conference Of Youth’ entail?

Prior to the official COP climate conference, the UN youth organisation organises an international conference as well. This initiative gives young people a voice and helps them exert their influence on the awareness and decision making about the climate. Local Conferences of Youth are the local initiatives that involve young people from different countries, by mobilising them and supporting them to take initiative.

How?

This local 2-day initiative organizes workshops, lectures, and discussions. 

Our initiative originated from a student collective of Amsterdam University College. As a student organisation we work on a 100% voluntary basis. Our university building has already been made available free of charge to serve as the location to host the event. Our university is conveniently located on the Amsterdam Science Park Campus (next to the train station with the same name) and there is ample parking available.

The 26 volunteers invest their time and effort to make this initiative happen. There is room for 150 young people to participate. The average estimated costs are € 30 per participant. Free workshops are given by several external partners, freelancers, and private individuals. These parties are not paid, but the travel costs and other expenses made e.g. for teaching materials are reimbursed. We expect this to amount to €2,500 in total. In addition, through marketing on Social Media we want to reach a sufficient amount of young people and make them enthusiastic to participate. Finally, we will partly compensate the expenses for enthusiastic participants, such as high-school students who do not have money themselves.

In order to ensure the success of the conference, we thank you for donations of all sizes! Help us educate people on climate issues, mobilize youth, and ultimately accelerate climate action! Jongerenactie voor het klimaat

Van 16 t/m 17 november komen jongeren zelf in actie voor het klimaat. Wij organiseren het eerste ‘Local Conference Of Youth’ evenement van Nederland. Ons doel is jongeren te mobiliseren en ze in 2 dagen bewust te maken van urgente klimaatkwesties en discussies te voeren over hun invloed en impact op de natuur.

Waarom?

Het klimaat is een van de belangrijkste thema’s voor de komende decennia. We willen veiligstellen dat de milieudoelstellingen die politici afspreken worden behaald. Het is cruciaal voor ons en voor onze kinderen om een gezonde planeet te waarborgen. 

Het opwarmen van de aarde, de invloed van het klimaat en veranderende weerpatronen gaat ons aan het hart. Door hierover met elkaar in contact te komen en waar mogelijk het heft in eigen hand te nemen, willen wij een positieve bijdrage leveren om de wereld beter te maken. Om onze impact te vergroten willen we zoveel mogelijk jongeren bereiken. Wij hebben toestemming gekregen van YOUNGO, de officiële jongerenvertegenwoordiging van de UNFCCC om dit evenement te organiseren.

Wat houdt een ‘Local Conference Of Youth’ in?

Voorafgaand aan de officiële COP klimaatconferentie organiseert de jongerenorganisatie van de VN ook een internationale conferentie. Dit initiatief geeft jongeren een stem en helpt hen invloed uit te oefenen op het bewustzijn en de besluitvorming over het klimaat. De Local Conferences of Youth zijn de lokale initiatieven die de jongeren uit verschillende landen hierbij betrekken, door hen te mobiliseren en ze te ondersteunen om zelf initiatief te nemen. 

Hoe?

Het lokale 2-daagse initiatief organiseert workshops, lezingen en discussies.

Ons initiatief is voortgekomen uit een studentencollectief van Amsterdam University College. Als studentenorganisatie werken we 100% op vrijwillige basis. Ons universiteitsgebouw is inmiddels kosteloos beschikbaar gesteld als locatie voor het evenement. Onze universiteit ligt op de Amsterdam Science Park Campus (aan het gelijknamige treinstation) en er is voldoende parkeergelegenheid. 

Deelnemers kunnen genieten van 2-3 maaltijden per dag (tegen kostprijs) en voor accommodatie (voor overnachtingen) wordt tevens een kleine vergoeding gevraagd. Een aantal studentenkamers op onze campus en de sporthallen van de Universiteit van Amsterdam fungeren als gedeelde accommodatie voor alle deelnemers.

De 26 vrijwilligers investeren de tijd en moeite om dit initiatief tot stand te brengen. Er is ruimte voor 150 jongeren om deel te nemen. De gemiddelde geschatte kosten zijn € 30 per deelnemer. Er worden gratis workshops gegeven door verschillende externe partners, freelancers en particulieren. Deze partijen worden niet betaald, maar hun reiskosten en andere gemaakte kosten, b.v. voor lesmateriaal worden vergoed. We verwachten dat deze kosten in totaal € 2.500 zullen zijn. Daarnaast willen we via marketing op Social Media voldoende jonge mensen bereiken en enthousiasmeren om deel te nemen. Tot slot zullen we deels de kosten voor enthousiaste deelnemers compenseren die zelf geen geld hebben, zoals middelbare scholieren.

Naast reeds verkregen donaties hebben we nu nog € 3.000 extra budget nodig om te kunnen slagen. Zou u ons initiatief willen steunen om dit mogelijk te maken?
