Laurie Hikes the PCT for Indigenous Women Hike
In July of 2019, I will begin my journey southbound (SOBO) on the PCT. For 4ish months, I will be walking from Canada to Mexico. I am absolutely thrilled about this journey, but I am struck with the responsibility that I have as I will be walking on stolen land.
Because of this, I am raising funds to donate to an organization called Indigenous Women Hike while I hike. I am raising $2,650, $1 for each mile that I hike.
Indigenous Women Hike supports indigenous women in returning to their ancestral lands, hiking traditionally indigenous routes. They provide gear and funding for indigenous women to do this. You can read more about them on Instagram at @IndigenousWomenHike or on their website, www.indigenouswomenhike.com. Currently, they are raising funds for a gear library so that indigenous women can have gear provided while hiking, as well as raising funds for an upcoming trip to Peru.
As a part of this, I have been asked by Jolie, who runs Indigenous Women Hike, to learn about the indigenous history of the PCT, which I will be doing leading up to my hike and for accountability, will share about on my Instagram, @bornsirius. I will also be making land acknowledgements of whose land I am on with any post that I make about the PCT on my Instagram account.
At different milestones, I will release blog posts on my own website (will link here as I write) about my hiking progress and what I have learned about the Indigenous History of the PCT:
$200 - 1st post, covering gear and first bit of indigenous history
$300 - 2nd post
$400- 3rd post
$500 - 4th post
$750 - 5th post
$1000 - 6th post
$1,250 - 7th post
$1,500 - 8th post
$1,750 - 9th post
$2000 - 10th post
$2,250 - 11th post
$2,650 - Final Post
Please join me in supporting indigenous women while I hike the PCT!
