Laura Camerlo Memorial Fund

As most of you know, Laura Camerlo passed away on November 15, 2017 at the age of 50.  Laura was an avid skier, a co-owner of Scott’s Scuba Service where she was a dive master and an important part of WPRC for many years.  Laura, Scott and Morgan have served many roles in their time with WPRC.  Scott is an active board member and helps to run first aid and CPR training for our coaching staff.  Morgan was an athlete in the program and subsequently transitioned to our coaching staff.  Laura and Scott served as our volunteer coordinators for several years helping to build out the process for getting our parents involved while creating social events so that our membership could better get to know one another.

What you may not know is that the cause of Laura’s death was determined to be sudden cardiac death (SCD) as result of a rare genetic heart condition called arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). This condition affects the proteins that make up the heart muscle and result in a weakened right ventricle. This means that the heart does not function properly in pumping blood around the body. This condition is often seen in young athletes who suffer from SCD.  This condition has very few subtle symptoms and is often diagnosed postmortem by means of an autopsy.

ARVC is a rare disorder that afflicts 1 in 1000 and is considered a genetic disease.  When Scott learned the cause and the potential for this to be genetic, he immediately sent Morgan for testing in order to determine if she may have the disease.  Testing for these rare disorders is not only expensive but it will be required in order for Morgan to lead a healthy life.

Since Laura’s passing, many of you have inquired as to how you may be able to help Scott and Morgan.  WPRC is blessed to have amazing parents, athletes and alumni who share a deep and lasting bond.  That bond was proudly on display when so many of you reached out to Scott and Morgan as well as to the WPRC community.  The Board of WPRC in conjunction with input from many of you and with agreement from Scott and Morgan is launching a gofundme page () where our parents, athletes and alumni will be able to make a contribution in honor of Laura. The funds will be used for the benefit of Scott and Morgan as well as to help build awareness of this life-threatening disorder.

On behalf of Scott and Morgan as well as the Board of WPRC, I want to thank all of you for your incredible kindness and generosity.  To learn more about ARVC, please see this link: https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/arrhythmogenic-right-ventricular-cardiomyopathy#definition.
