Help Bring the First Cancer Treatment Facility to the Navajo Reservation
Did you know that no cancer treatment is available on any Indian reservation?
Nowhere does this create more hardship than on the Navajo community, where cancer patients must travel at least 125 miles off the reservation for treatment. Some patients must even travel the same distance as DC to NYC just for one round of chemo!
Cancer is an urgent concern for Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Members because the U.S. government abandoned hundreds of uranium mines that continue to contaminate their environment.
A 2015 University of New Mexico study found that 85% of Navajo homes have uranium contamination, and Navajos living near these mines have higher levels of uranium in their bones than 95% of the American population.
Navajo, Hopi and San Juan Southern Paiute Tribal Members should not have to fight cancer without access to local treatment.
With your help, Tuba City Hospital can launch an oncology program on the Navajo community. Married oncologists Drs. Frank Dalichow and Johanna DiMento are loading up their doggies and heading from Maryland to Navajo to begin providing cancer care to Navajo, Hopi and Paiute patients this Fall. But we have no clinic yet.
