Lantern Hill - Free Clinic

For the last seven years, I have been involved in Lantern Hill, a small nonprofit based in Zorrillo, Mexico. During my time as a summer intern, I would spend eight weeks teaching classes to the 100 children in the school, provide nutritious lunches and work with the volunteers to expand the program. I have seen so much good come from this organization. Some of Lantern Hills accomplishments include offering this small community a garden for fresh produce, provide locals steady jobs, and offering the children scholarships to continue on in their education. Since the start of Lantern Hill, numerous children have moved onto middle and high school, a very expensive feat, and four young adults have attended COLLEGE, something unheard of for this community with so little resources.

My last summer working with Lantern Hill, I was able to complete a research project directed at the children's dietary intake. Viewing their deficiencies and over-consumption, I was able to work with the cooks and offer recommendations to target nutritional areas where the organization could better serve the kids.

After starting my career as a nurse, I thought my time working with Lantern Hill would come to a close. However, I was approached to be on the executive board as a health partner and continue brainstorming how to provide longevity to the healthcare of the children. The team revealed that a new building was being purchased to expand the school further and they asked if I had any ideas on what to do with the extra space. Through my own nursing education, I have seen how community free clinics have benefitted those who have fewer resources to receive healthcare. The idea was well received by the board, I found a team of passionate nurses, and this summer we will be OPENING a space where the community of Zorrillo can come and receive help and health education!

July 6-12, a team of 10 nurses will be heading down to Mexico with medical supplies to run the school and work on making our vision a reality. Our goal is to have an area where the children/parents/community members can come and educate themselves on topics like nutrition, basic first aid, environmental quality, physical activity, and mental health. We will be completing a community outreach day, offering a full assessment which people can have a physical copy of their vital signs, vision, height, and weight, etc. This will be given back to them as a physical paper to have an up-to-date version of their health status.

We are raising money to go toward this clinic. We are in need of basic medical supplies including blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, blood glucose machines, Snellen charts, pulse oximeters, and other important equipment to provide the most accurate results for the community. 100% of the funds will be used to provide this care to the community of Zorrillo.

More information about Friends of Lantern Hill, Inc.: Our mission is to support Linterna Del Camino in breaking the chains of poverty through education in the community of Zorrillo, Baja Mexico. We strive to keep the youth of the community in school, and out of the workforce through education. This is accomplished by providing teachers to assist the youth as well as providing a safe and loving environment for the children before and/or after school. Lunch is also provided to all who participate in the program.
