Land Revitalization Project at the IIM

Tax deductible
Little Boy, the Iroquois Indian Museum’s CFO (Chief Feline Officer) is helping his humans raise money for a multifaceted land revitalization project! Spring has arrived in the Schoharie Valley, and it’s the perfect time to address our role as land stewards and take action that will benefit Museum visitors and the surrounding ecosystem.

The Iroquois Indian Museum is home to a 45-acre nature park consisting of fields and woods, with a feeder stream winding its way down to Cobleskill Creek. Lush and colorful flowerbeds attract native birds and butterflies. A bountiful garden featuring our Three Sisters (Corn, Beans, and Squash) greets visitors at the front of the Museum. These cherished outdoor areas are important educational resources and integral components of the diverse habitat that surrounds the Museum.

We plan on transforming our outdoor learning spaces through a comprehensive approach rooted in sustainability practices. Donations to this campaign will enable the following:

Biodiversity Development
We plan to re-introduce a number of native plants to the nature park and gardens surrounding the museum to enrich the natural landscape. Donations allow us to purchase seedlings, plants, mulch, fertilizer, and other necessary supplies.

“Restoring native plant habitat is vital to preserving biodiversity. By creating a native plant garden, each patch of habitat becomes part of a collective effort to nurture and sustain the living landscape.”

Erosion Prevention
The Museum’s hilly landscape adds to its beauty but is vulnerable to erosion. Erosion washes away rich topsoil and depletes the land of critical nutrients. To guard against erosion, phlox (a low creeping plant) will be planted on select hillsides. The robust roots of phlox lock in topsoil, slowing erosion from wind and rain.

Educational Signage Production and Installation
To further our educational mission, we aim to have interpretive signs installed throughout our gardens and nature park. These signs will identify prominent plants and introduce visitors to the cultural and symbolic significance these plants have for Haudenosaunee.

Professional Consulting
Your donation will enable us to consult with botanical experts at Landis Arboretum. Specialized expertise in identifying what plants we have, suggesting what we should introduce, and providing valuable insight on the care and management of our new plantings will insure the long-term success of our 2019 land revitalization project and of your investment.

Our goal is reach $1,000 by June 15th. Donate today and support the Iroquois Indian Museum land stewardship efforts! Your contribution can make a difference.
