OUR AIM

06/2019  Baltic Sea Cycle Tour
This time myself and Steve are cycling through 10 countries around the Baltic Sea to raise as much money as we can to help Lake Bunyonyi Community Village in Uganda.
They are striving to become self-sufficient, and embarking initially on rearing chickens to sell their eggs, then developing similar projects to help give themselves an income. They need help financing the infrastructure to get these projects off the ground.
Read on to see how the money we raised on the last has helped, and follow our cycle trip on: www.pedalondreckly.blogspot.com

04/2017

A BRIEF HISTORY

The charity for Lake Bunyonyi Community Village Orphanage, in Uganda, was set up about 10 years ago by one of the staff members of Oasis Overland Adventures after they saw the hard work that Edison Twebaze, a local and an orphan himself, was doing to help children who had lost their families to HIV and AIDS. Ever since, the big yellow truck has stopped at the orphanage, bringing visitors and donations, and seeing the progress that has been made over the years.
OUR CONNECTION
We had the pleasure of visiting the orphanage last year with Oasis, and met Edison and some of the children. The community are striving to become self-sufficient, growing their own food and sharing in general tasks like building, cooking and collecting water. They have built a primary school for the young children, they provide lunches for about 150 children daily, and permanent homes for those who don't have extended families they can live with. Monetary donations help pay for food, teachers, and the older children to get an education at the boarding school in Kabale.

WATER WISHES
It is an arduously steep hike down to the lakeside to fetch water, and something that these children have to do daily, regardless of their physical condition. During our visit Edison was very interested to talk to Steve, with his engineering mind, about the possibility of getting some sort of water pump. But the logistics and maintenance are just not feesible.
Edison has since been in meetings with the government, who have now agreed to connect their village to mains water, for a total fee of $60,000. They are allowed to pay in $20,000 installments.

We have already sponsored a child ourselves and are in regular contact with Edison, so we know that all money raised will go directly to help the orphanage.
It would be fantastic to raise enough money to help them get mains water connected, especially after experiencing first hand the hardship of getting water, something we all take for granted when we turn on a tap.

Please share this with everyone you know, and thank you for your support!
