LaConchita Survivor Fights Breast Cancer

Diane Hart was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic cancer. The primary tumor started in the right breast and was not seen on the previous year’s mammogram. It was discovered to have metastasized to her bones, especially her right hip.

Diane loves to walk her two dogs on the beach and she is a swimmer, which helped her recover from her numerous injuries sustained during the 2005 massive landslide that buried her alive. She was buried 30 ft. deep, for 4 ½ hours, with only two feet of air and 20 broken bones, including a crushed left arm and 12 broken ribs. She recently published her book, “A Silent Stillness – Buried Alive” about her experience in the La Conchita Landslide.

Ironically, Diane is a nurse who worked with breast cancer patients in her long career as a plastic surgical nurse, and she later trade marked “Ask Diane” with Mentor Corporation. The Plastic Surgery Nurses Association recently sent her this note:

"Please know what an impression you have on many people. The TN/AL Chapter has always been about education and how fitting to share with you some of our dollars. Above all you are “The Educator” to me. I have seen and heard you inform and support countless people who are in need. Please know you have meant a great deal to many, especially me. LuAnn "

Diane did a remarkable job recovering from the La Conchita landslide. She lost everything she owned, her home, her belongings, and ultimately her financial security; $780,000.00 in total. She helped raise her granddaughter, Cora for 4 years and eventually she was able to return to work as a nurse developing a successful little practice doing cosmetic procedures with laser and injectables in San Luis Obispo, California.

Last year Diane was interviewed by Reporter Kacey Drescher, with KEYT – TV about helping the people of Santa Barbara after their mudslides of 2018. The segment won an award for excellence in broadcasting by the American Broadcasting Association.

Diane’s attitude has been amazing. She doesn’t say, "why me?" but instead, "maybe there are ways I can help other women." She will need to move from her rented 2 bedroom 2 bath condo in Pismo Beach to a smaller easier to manage trailer home in the area. She is excited about this step and says as she goes through chemotherapy and fights the cancer she wants somewhere to live that is easier to her move around in, still maintain her independence, and ultimately heal.

Please find it in your heart to help this amazing woman, she has helped so many others and deserves support in this fight for her life.
