My friend, Rachelle Huth has had numerous health setbacks the last several years. She has received treatment for back problems including ongoing pain management injections for years. The doctors also tried unsuccessfully to treat the pain with a neurostimulator that had to be removed. During this time, she was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia.
In late 2012, she had a section of her colon removed due to necrosis and the growth of a mass relating to a prior surgery. After that surgery, she had an infection that led to spending a month in the hospital. Since then, there have been several surgeries to fix complications created by scar tissue from previous surgeries creating obstructions and causing other painful complications.
Recently, she was diagnosed with gastroparesis. Basically, this is paralysis of the stomach. A normal persons stomach empties after a meal after 1 1/2 to 2 hours. In a study the doctors performed, just a few bites of food were still sitting in here stomach after 7 hours. The results of the inability to digest her food leads to the stomach stretching and crowding organs causing other problems. She is unable to eat because the stomach is always full and since food isn't being digested it can lead to malnutrition.
Today the pain prevents her from being able to work so she had to give up her love of photography. Most days are spent in bed as she is too weak, nauseous or in too much pain to do much else. Doctors have been talking for years about sending her to the Mayo Clinic to see if their medical teams can find a solution that will provide a more positive outlook on the future but the cost of such a trip has prohibited it. Her doctors have finally said they know of no other alternative but to take a trip to the Mayo as they have no other options.
The donations made will be used to help offset the cost of travel, hotel, rental car and medical costs that are not covered by insurance. If there is any money left over after the Mayo trip is covered, it will be applied toward the medical expenses that have accumulated over the past several years.
Our hope by traveling to the Mayo is that doctors will come up with a treatment plan that will give Rachelle the relief that she needs to enjoy spending time with her kids while still at home and also be able enjoy any time she gets with her son off in college.
