Help a rape survivor fight back

Donation protected
Trauma impacts each person in different and difficult ways. The effects can be devastating and heartbreaking. Two years ago, my friend Kyla Padbury was raped. A man that she had liked and trusted took away her choice twice within a matter of weeks. She reported it to the police, but it didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to be prosecuted. In August 2017, in an act of extreme bravery and with the sense that other women needed to know they weren’t alone, she came forward about what happened online. This was followed by an overwhelming response, both positive and negative. The positive response included many individuals confiding their own experiences with rape and sexual assault, including ten women privately disclosing experiences with this same man. He had hurt people before. And throughout the negativity, vicious online attacks, and even lost friends, she remained honest about her story and kind to everyone around her. In the past two years, Kyla has experienced a variety of effects of trauma and retraumatization. She has fought so hard through it. Yet, after two years of pressuring with multiple cease and desist letters, her rapist has decided to sue for defamation. Due to those ten private accounts, it is clear this is a pattern of behavior. In addition to the unfortunate necessity for legal fees, each day this case spends in court is a day that Kyla has to sit in the same room as her rapist reliving her trauma. We hope that you will consider donating to help her cover these legal fees or sharing this page so that others may read her story.

Kyla is a student at Utah Valley University and a fierce friend. She enjoys singing, hiking, and making new friends. She is someone who has consistently displayed incredible resiliency, vulnerability, and strength. She has inspired me and many others to be honest about our own experiences with sexual assault, harassment, and other violence. She has touched so many lives with her story and now we ask that you give back if you can.
