Raising funds for ASOMART in Bolivia

HELP FAIR RAISE FUNDS FOR WOMEN IN BOLIVIA

You’re likely well aware that women and women’s economic freedom is not always a priority, leaving the women of these communities without funding for their own associations and livelihoods.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

Last year we attended the Fairtrade Fortnight in the UK, and put the call out to help us raise funds for the Fairtrade Foundation. Thanks to our supporters’ generosity, FAIR contributed to £1500.

This year Fairtrade is campaigning for a living income to become a reality for cocoa farmers in West Africa with a provoking tagline «She deserves £1.98»

FAIRTRADE IN BOLIVIA

We love our relationship with ANAPQUI, the co-op we source our quinoa for FAIR vodka from. And we love that we can be part of their Fairtrade community.

But, Fairtrade isn’t perfect. ANAPQUI only receives about 20K€ in Fairtrade premiums each year, and due to Fairtrade standards, 50% of that has to be spent on things related to improving the environment, and the other 50% is donated to communities.

ASOMART

Literally called «asociacion de mujeres artesanas», which translates to the association of women craft-workers, ASOMART works to empower women all over the Salar de Uyuni.

They do this by organizing knitting and sewing courses that teach them how to make Bolivian fabrics and clothes, providing sewing machines and weaving looms the women can use to create their pieces, and finally, they help them to sell their clothes, fabrics and other pieces in La Paz.

“OUR IDEA IS TO EMPOWER WOMEN FROM ALL COMMUNITIES OF ANAPQUI AND GIVE THEM THE CHANCE TO BE PART OF THIS ASSOCIATION. “ - Alexandre Koiransky

OBJECTIVE

The problem is that ASOMART is located in Challapata and some of the producers and women live very far from this city, making it impossible for women further away to come and work at ASOMART for a day.

Right now, only 44 women benefit directly from this association, and the goal is to help 106 women through our sponsorship in 2019. You don’t need to be not great at math to understand that’s a pretty big per- centage and we feel chuffed about that. After this, we want to reassess the needs in partnership with the community and decide how we can best continue to support them in the years to come.

USE OF FUNDS

1. Create new offices in the Salar de Uyuni
2. Buy equipment, such as sewing and knitting machines, computers, and printers
3. Buy wool and materials used to produce fabrics and clothes
4. Pay the teachers that come from La Paz
