Keith Wood Free Speech Case

$3,660 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 93 people in 29 months
My brother-in-law, Keith Wood, was arrested for simply handing out brochures about jury rights on a public sidewalk in front of the Mecosta County Michigan  Courthouse on November 24, 2015. The court set a $150,000.00 bond to try to force him to be in jail over Thanksgiving away from his wife and seven children and refused to appoint him a court-appointed attorney.

Keith has recently been found guilty of tampering with a jury even though there was no jury or trial the day that he was handing out educational pamphlets.  You can read my summary of the two day trial in the updates on this page.

He is appealing this guilty verdict of course since he is completely innocent of this charge.

I've started this campaign to help raise money to protect our freedom of speech and help Keith with his case. Cases involving constitutional rights can be a long and expensive process, especially when you're taking on a judge, a chief prosecutor, and the government.

Our freedom of speech is worth fighting for. We cannot stand by while we all lose our rights. Please help my brother-in-law.

As I write this update an innocent man is spending his third weekend in the Mecosta County jail. He was handing out flyers issued by a sanctioned 501 3 C non-profit organization on a public side walk...and somehow that is jury tampering.

Last weekend Keith was neglected and left in a holding cell for 10 1/2 hours with only a blanket. This weekend was a little better as he was only left in the holding cell for 6 hours. Then he was placed in a cell with 16 other men. It happens to be the coldest area in the building and the vents blow cold air as the men are frigid the entire time. (Keith did not complain about this, he just shared his experience with me and I am complaining)

He has filed his latest appeal with the State of Michigan. This appeal has cost him over $1000.

Thanks again to all who have generously donated to his cause and if any feel led to donate please do. You have enabled him to continue this fight for all of our free speech rights.

Please remember Keith and his family in your prayers. He isn't the first innocent man to spend time in jail and I am sure he won't be the last.

Yesterday was another disappointing day for true justice and free speech.
A judge denied Keith's appeal and ordered him to start his jail time. He is sentenced to 8 consecutive weekends where he must report on Friday evening and is released on Sunday evening. He was immediately taken into custody to start serving his first weekend.
Monday his attorneys will be appealing to the next level, the state of Michigan. Of course each appeal requires more money so your donations here are greatly appreciated.
As Keith's attorney said, "This case is far from over!"

Update as of 7/21/2017 5:40 PM Eastern.

Bad news: Here is a link to a report on Keith's sentencing this morning.

http://fox17online.com/2017/07/21/man-to-be-sentenced-friday-for-passing-out-pamphlets-outside-courthouse/

Great news! A visiting judge just overruled Judge Booher's denial of the stay motion. Keith will now only have to serve his sentence if he loses on appeal. He should be getting out of jail momentarily.

Of course it took a visiting judge, someone from OUTSIDE Mecosta County to exercise common sense and fairness.

The appeals process will cost plenty so you can be assured every dollar is deeply appreciated.

Thanks for your continued support and prayers.

REAL QUICK! Please share this post with everyone you know. Keith is fighting for all of us and our free speech rights. A copy of the transcript of the trial must be acquired in order to file an appeal. According to Keith's attorney, the transcript will cost between $1000 and $1500. Each time Keith appeals to a higher court he will need at least $400 per appeal. This is above the many thousands he has already spent for his attorneys.

The corrupt officials want him to quit. Please help him continue this fight. Maybe we can all skip a trip out to our favorite restaurant and use that money to support our free speech while we still can!

Thank you all very much.

Have you folks called the ACLU? Seriously, you should consider it. I believe in some cases they can even provide free legal help.

God bless you as you fight this injustice. We will never give up our rights not only as jurors, but to tell people what THEIR rights are.

I also donated to the Fully Informed Jury Association based on your story. This is outrageous. Praying for justice in your case.
