Kwanza’s Long Road to Recovery

Donation protected

On June 16, 2019 - a beautiful day in the BVI - my brothers and I set sail on a charter boat to enjoy the fun, sun, sand, and sea that Jost van Dyke, Norman Island, and the Willy T had to offer. Joined by family and friends, we had an amazing time and created new memories.

On our last stop, my brother, Kwanza, went for a quick swim before we left to head back to shore. As he arrived at the ladder to get back on the boat, the boat engine was suddenly engaged. Kwanza began being pulled under and into the propellers. If he wasn't holding onto the ladder for dear life, more than his left leg could have been severely damaged.

Thanks to the quick thinking and help of others, Kwanza was rushed into shore and taken to the hospital where the doctors and surgeons were able to save not only his leg but his life. The traumatic injuries sustained included a severed femur and heel, broken bones in the knee, and other deep lacerations along his left leg and right foot. Due to the lacerations, his sciatic nerve was also severed, causing him to lose feeling in his toes.
The work completed during his first surgery was a temporary solution in order to keep him stable. He was then airlifted to a trauma center in Miami, where he will remain throughout the process.

To date, Kwanza has undergone three (3) additional surgeries and is expected to have at least 3 more ahead of him to place a rod in his femur, fix his knee, and repair the severed nerves. If all goes well, he will then move onto rehab to learn how to walk with his left leg again. The doctors' current estimate is anywhere from 5 months to a year for general recovery.

My family and I are humbly asking for your support with "Kwanza's Long Road to Recovery." Your generous donation will assist with medical expenses and other bills that need to be covered while he is unable to work. Since none of us reside in Florida, the funds will also assist with travel, accommodations, transportation, and meal expenses to ensure that he continues to have all of the support that he needs.

Throughout this ordeal, Kwanza remains positive and in good spirits, treating each day as a blessing. We are all thankful for the outpouring of thoughts, prayers, support, and encouragement received from the very beginning. We appreciate any amount you may be able to donate.
