At Hudlow we have a holiday tradition; “Slip Into a Good Book.” Some of us come from very literature-rich homes. Our goal is to share our love of books associated with the comfort of warm slippers for every child.
Our urban school serves students with very diverse needs. Our pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students come with many cultural strengths.
Many of our students are living below poverty levels and they do not have a lot of choices of books in their homes. This campaign ensures that they have special books over the two weeks of Winter break so they can stay engaged in learning.
All year, we collect donations. We received a grant from the Educational Enrichment Foundation for the books. We are looking for support for slippers. In December, we start displaying the slippers in the office. We hope that folks will ask us about them so we can collect more and more. Our goal is to have 320 slippers by December 12. We have been successful in collecting donations and gifts for 7 years. Each year our campaign starts in October. We wish you could see the faces of our students when they try on their slippers and skip down the hallways ;it is so exciting…for them and for us. We tell the children, “Every time you read over the break, you must put on your slippers; they will help you read better.” Any cash or slipper donations are accepted starting now at 502 N Caribe Ave. Tucson, AZ 85710.
