Work Family
We often feel, treat, and take care of each other like family.

So, you can imagine how we felt when we recently found out our co-worker’s 17-month old daughter was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH).  LCH is a rare disorder that occurs in 1:200,000 children, most often ages 1 – 3 years.

Our co-worker is Valera Kushnir, his wife is Tara, and his daughter is Galyna.  About 1 month ago, Galyna was having difficulty walking, standing, and appeared to be in pain.  She was promptly taken to All Children’s Hospital and was diagnosed within 5 days, which is amazing.  You can imagine how quickly life changed for the Kushnir family.  The prognosis is good for Galyna but it does come with risks and lots of medical expenses.  Aside from the multitude of tests and procedures that have already occurred, Galyna will be in treatment for a full calendar year.  She recently had surgery to implant an IV port in her chest for administering medicine and will have outpatient procedures every 3 weeks through the rest of the year.  These outpatient procedures are chemo.  In addition, she will have a PET scan every 6 weeks to see what kind of progress she is making.

Because we care so much about Valera, Tara and Galyna we are starting a Go Fund Me towards the cost of the medical treatments.  We invite anyone to participate.

You are welcome to check out Galyna’s progress on her families website*.  Click Here

Update from the Kushnir family:

"Galyna had her 2nd PET scan last week, and today we got the results. Although Tara and I hoped that the 2nd tumor would be gone completely, we are told that it has shrunk, but it is still there. One thing they are not able to tell us based on the scan is whether there is still activity in the tumor or if what the scan is showing are inactive remains.

It is definitely good news, as any reduction is positive news. Additionally, the doctors felt confident that Galyna is on the right track and thus they are not going to add any additional medications along with Vinblastine (her chemotherapy medication).

So going forward Galyna will have a chemo once every 21 days. She will have chemo and daily steroids during the same week, and then have a 2 week break from everything. This schedule will continue until about July of next summer. Although that seems like such a long time away, I’m sure it will arrive before we even notice.

Thank you for looking out for us and thinking of us through this time. We will continue keeping you all posted!

Valera, Tara and Galyna. "

Update from the Kushnir family:

" Galyna finished her first round of 6-week chemo treatments and handled it so well. We got her PET scans results back to see how the chemo is working and we are extremely happy with the results. When we started the treatments Galyna had tumors in the T3 and S1 of her spine. The scan shows no new activities and that the T3 tumor is GONE!

The S1 still has some activity going on and the doctors anticipate it will be gone by the end of the 2nd 6-week cycle. Galyna had her 8th session this morning, so we only have 4 weeks left before another PET scan.

We cannot thank everyone enough for the support we have received through this time. We are grateful to each and every one of you!

Valera, Tara, and Galyna"
