Kubas College/essentials fund

Abdul Kuba ("Kuba") is a fellow Graduate Student at UTSA who has enriched the lives of those of us who call him a "fellow cohort". He is a fine, intelligant, studious, dedicated, humble, hard-working man.  He has been living here in San Antonio legally since September 2016 as an International Student who was awarded a scholarship that enabled him to attend college at UTSA. Unfortunately, the scholarship did not come close to covering all his costs for tuition, housing, books, and living expenses.

Kuba lives a very minimalistic life. He has had to work very hard to have things that you and I take for granted. Not being a U.S. resident, Kuba was unsure of where to go, and who to ask for assistance when his scholarship funds ran out.  Kuba is employed as a Research Assistant here at UTSA,  but because he is an international student his hours are very limited and he earns  just above minimum wage.  He gets to and from school using public transportation, and if he cannot get to where needs to go by bus,  he walks.

Fellow grad students and I discovered that he was going without basic necessities such as food and decent warm clothing at the start of this Spring semester. We are asking for your assistance in helping us to raise money so that he can afford to pay his tuition for Fall/Spring 2017-2018, housing costs, groceries, textbooks, school supplies, and still have a bit of pocket money for unexpected expenses.

A personal statement from Kuba:

My name is Abdul Kuba. I am an international student from Ghana, earning my MA in history. My main goal in life is to acquire knowledge through education and contribute my quota to the development of the world at large. I dream of acquiring the Ph.D and teach in a university in my homeland or any part of the world that the almighty might lead me to. I believe by this I can help make the world a better place through teaching also donating to the needy.

However, things have turn out to be a bit difficult for me. I lost both parent when I was barely three years of age and since then I have be fighting hard  to realize my dream. I believe determination, perseverance and hard work is the hallmark to success. It was in line with this that I came to the United States.

I am a Nau Scholar but my scholarship package is only for the first year and due to State laws that prevent International Students from working beyond twenty hours per week I am finding it difficult to meet my basic needs and save for the second year. I am doing everything within my power not kill my dream and I know with any help you will offer will us make the world a better place.

Thank you,

Abdul Kuba
