Saving Gus

Hey all. As some of you know, my cat Gus was hit by a car Sunday. I did not see the accident, but he was in critical condition when I found him.

At the vet, I was told he had a hernia in his stomach wall which resulted in his intestines spilling into the rest of his abdomen.

When he was in surgery, the vet found other complications such as: a tear in his trachea, a damaged lung, and his liver had been pushed up into his chest. They were able to fix these issues.

The next day we were told that because the tissue in his abdominal wall was damaged, it had torn again and would need another surgery to repair.

During the second surgery, they discovered a floating rib that they believe is the reason for the tears.
They fixed the tear and the rib (twice). Gus’ prognoses was looking really great at that point.

Yesterday we were told that Gus had SIRS and would most likely need a blood transfusion. Even with the suggested treatment, he would have a less than 50% chance of survival. We agreed to treat with antibiotics overnight and monitor his blood work for changes before committing to the transfusion.

After talking to the vet this morning, we have found out that Gus no longer needs a blood transfusion (though this may change). They are going to continue to treat with antibiotics. He is still hospitalized and will be for the foreseeable future. They will be running more blood tests this afternoon to see the effects of the antibiotics but I am hopeful. He allowed the vet staff to feed him twice last night and is looking a little perkier. He is also lifting his head and responding to noises. The vet this morning thinks Gus can make it.

Right now, we are at $4,800 in vet bills. This could change if a blood transfusion is needed. This also does not account for the money needed to keep him at the ICU. I have been approved for a credit line through care credit for $7,900. This credit line will take care of the immediate bill but this is still a huge financial burden.

Gus is my best friend in the whole world. Everyone who has ever met him has fallen in love. He is such a fighter and I really think he can beat this. I’m hoping you will take a chance on Gus by donating, sharing this page, or by sending love.

I will be posting updates to this page.

Gus is currently at Willamette Veterinary Hospital, you can donate directly to them by calling (541) [phone redacted] and mentioning Gus.

Thank you you so much
