Kristi Ramos, 27 years old, has Down Syndrome and a rare disease called Keratoconus, a degenerative disease in which the cornea of her eyes thins and becomes conical. Without surgery called Corneal Crosslinking in both eyes, her vision can continue deteriorating and eventually can bring her blindness. For some reason, people with Down Syndrome are about 100 times more likely to have this ailment.
Kristi will be visiting Dr. Forseith, June 26th, he travels from Gunnison Colorado to Littleton Colorado to Corneal Consultants of Colorado. He will be evaluating Kristi to see if she is a good candidate for the surgery.
Kristi is also being considered for this procedure by Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler of the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute out of California. Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler has considerable experience working with special needs patients.
This procedure will bring hope that Kristi's condition can be improved. The procedure unfortunately is not covered by current insurance plans and will cost approximately $4000 per eye.
