Charlie's Van

If you know me or my family, chances are you know our Charlie. Charlie's life is a true testament to the power of prayer, proof that miracles do happen & that with God, all things are possible. For those of you that don't know Charlie, he is my little brother and my hero. At age 5, Charlie was struck with meningococcal meningitis. As a result of the illness and after beating the odds by simply being here, Charlie is a quadruple amputee, kidney transplant recipient & heart attack survivor. Above all else, he is the kindest man I know with an unshakeable faith and strength. Through all of this, Charlie has remained humble. He graduated high school, attended MTSU & has worked his way up from a Door Greeter to Assistant Mgr with Wal-Mart.

Tuesday night while driving home from work, Charlie was in a car accident. THANK YOU GOD, Charlie is okay but his van is not. Ten years ago, Charlie purchased a van, complete with all of the conversions necessary for him to drive. This van has offered Charlie an enormous amount of independence. Unfortunately, the van was totalled making it necessary for him to purchase another vehicle. The conversions alone were around $50k not including the price of the vehicle. Charlie would never and has never thought to ask for help. As his big sister, I feel the need to do everything I can to help him get back in a van. If you feel called to give, there is no greater cause. If you aren't able to, prayers are appreciated as well as God has always provided!

Before this Gofund Me is taken down, I want to thank all of you, (some once again, and others for the first time). I had set out on a path, planning, working to secure my future. Unfortunately, I had an accident that totaled my transportation and threw all of those plans into chaos. I am not unfamiliar with those situations and trust God to help me find a way to continue to support myself. And once again, knowing how daunting and financially huge this would be, HE came through once again. My older sister with her, "We've Got This!" personality and her HUGE faith, set out to figure how "we" were going to fix this problem. She knew that time was important, a new promotion and the promise of dependability I had made were hanging in the balance. Her living is helping people. She helps people get jobs, so she knows first hand how important this would be for my future. She made this GO FUND ME page and told my story, encouraging me in her optimism that , "if only people knew about what happened, they would gladly help you!" I was able to continue with my job and do the things necessary to get transoportaion while I searched for the answer to an equipped van. I had insured my old one, as well as all of the modifications needed for me to be able to drive. The insurance paid off the old vehicle. I once again had to purchase a new van as well as the modifications that cost as much as the van itself. No matter which avenue I took, I had to have a substancial down payment, as well as the ability to make large car payments. So my siblings got to work. I have a hard time asking for help, so God has provided me with siblings that will do just about anything for me. I received enough in donations to make the downpayment needed to get a van that will be dependable for a long time.
A wise woman once told my mother that good people don't give to others in order to get recognition or a pat on the back, but that a THANK YOU NOTE is always appreciated. You get the opportunity to acknowledge the receipt of their gift and to tell them how you are using it. My mother shared it with me. So to each of you that sent a donation to the site and to those that gave to me directly, I want you to know how much it means to me that you helped me. I realize that you sacrificed something to help me and I am grateful. I hope to make you proud.
A special thank you from Charlie!

Today was a big day! A red letter day! Charlie left Mobility Works in a new van! Thanks to all of the prayers & donations, Charlie was able to make a "necessary" sizeable down payment so that he could be approved to finance the remaining balance. As his big sister, I was hoping (I haven't given up) that the full $51,000 would be raised to pay for the van. I know that God has a plan, I'm not sure what that plan is but I do know this journey with Charlie has taught me a lot ...there are still so many GOOD & KIND people in this world & that part of Charlie's testimony is his determination "to do life" on his own. I am still a ways off from meeting the goal I set for this page, however, the prayers & generosity shown so far blow me away!!! I'm attaching pictures to this update so that you may see what you helped Charlie accomplish & I still encourage everyone to pray & share!!!!

Life has been so busy with all of this crazy weather! Charlie has been working hard to save for this van on top of the donations. The rental van is unfortunately expensive, in the thousands now. Insurance paid off the wrecked van and I have to say they were certainly fair with everything other than taking into account how much more a rental is for someone that needs more than just a regular old rental car. Charlie is still smiling and determined and I know he is going to come out on top. As his sister, I am still asking for prayers and donations if you are able or called to help. The donations thus far have meant more than a thank you card or email could ever express and I am not sure what we would have done without them.

Is there another way to donate besides GoFund Me? They keep a percentage of the money raised.

I would like to make a quick comment. I am Charlie's aunt. I know that most people assume that Charlie is on disability. He is not, and never has been. He works ten hour days and lives off of his paycheck just like everyone else. He has insurance, but we all know that they only pay part, so he has a lot of out-of-pocket medical expenses. Most people assume that there are endless funds and grants and societies to help pay all of the expenses but there are not. Charlie has never asked for or received that kind of help. So...that is why it is so incredibly heart-warming and overwhelming to see people opening their hearts to him this way. I have watched this little boy grow up to be a wonderful man who is an inspiration to everyone he meets and words can not say how grateful I am for each and every one of you who have donated here. Charlie would tell you that he doesn't deserve any special treatment...but I believe he is THE most special person I know.
