Kokoda Water Tank Project

$8,870 of $10,000 goal

Many villages in the Kokoda area of PNG are located on steep hills a long way from local rivers.  Villagers walk considerable distances each day to cart water and wash.  Water on tap in the villages would make an enormous improvement to their daily lives – giving them more time to focus more crops, housing and education.

In September this year we set out to raise $5000 hoping to supply a four water tanks to Kokoda villages. We raised the $5000 in days so increased our ambition – we raised $8,000 in 2 months. It costs about $1800 per tank including cement, pipes, guttering, taps and other accessories.  The enclosed “nestable” tanks are from Warrior Water Tanks (made in Lae in PNG). The accessories, transport and installation are through Hardware Haus in Popondetta.

In October we visited PNG.  After consulting with the villages we decided it was best to start with three 5,500 litre tanks.  We purchased the tanks and had them transported with installation supplies to Kokoda.  Oiaguba and their neighbouring village, Foke, decided to share the tanks - taking one each - and the third went to Beleni village.  Leaders from the villages assisted with the logistics including transport and people to unload the tanks and supplies (see photos and video on out Kokoda Water Tank Project Facebook page).  Over the next few weeks the villagers will set up the tanks.  The onset of the wet season will slow this process down.  But they have promised to send photos once it’s done.

In the long term, we aim to establish an ongoing supply of these tanks with follow up maintenance.  The remaining funds will used for any follow up requirements and/or put towards the next phase of installation in 2017.  While we were in Kokoda we consulted with other villages and have started a list of new locations. We also plan to supply more tanks  for Oiaguba which has a growing population.

More info for those interested:

The tanks are made in PNG by Warrior Tanks and supplied by Hardware Haus in Popendetta - a town three hours drive from Kokoda.  They stock tanks in three sizes (3500, 5500 & 9500 litres) with various piping, foundation cement, and other accessories) and provide transport and assistance with installation.

My connection to Kokoda goes back to the 1960s when my parents were teachers there.  I regularly return to visit the families of friends I went to school with.  During these visits, in conversation with village leaders, we talked about the problem of safe access to clean water.  The Kokoda Water Project is the result.

We have ordered and paid for the first three Warrior Water Tanks (made in PNG!) plus accessories, transport and installation through Hardware Haus.

The tanks will be delivered and installed in Kokoda in the next couple of weeks - and we will be there from Oct 10th to help out and record the occasion on video.

The unspent funds in reserve can cover unexpected installation and maintenance costs and will be put towards the next stage of the project (more tanks).

Thank you to all who have donated and shared our project. The Kokoda villagers are delighted and of course we are thrilled. Given that we have exceeded our target in one week - we have decided to lift our dream to $10,000. This will allow to purchase a total of four tanks in this first stage of the project. Cool clear water for Kokoda! As Warrior Tanks PNG would say "Strongpela Bikpela Best Ya!"
TANKS again.
