Koko Crater Stables was once the preeminent riding facility and stable on Oahu. It was a place of learning for hundreds of children and adults on the island of Oahu, and a busy community-gathering place for decades. Through successive management changes, shorter and shorter lease terms from the City, reductions in the scope of use – the property has fallen into serious disrepair.
After 56 years of operation and service to the community, the City & County of Honolulu decided that that Koko Crater Stables was to be closed. The City had plans to bulldoze the entire property and fold it into the Botanical Gardens.
Understanding how important this community landmark is, a group of concerned residents and horse lovers have gotten together to Save Koko Crater Stables. As a result, the Koko Crater Restoration Project and Horse Haven, LLC were established.
We are asking for financial support from the community, horse-lovers, or anyone who understands the impact of these types of facilities have on the local people, especially children.
We are raising money to help get the facility back in working order, safe for people and horses.
The repair work needed is extensive. The fences on all the arenas need repair, the metal gates and separating walls on all 41 stalls are bent, broken and rusted, and need to be replaced. The roof leaks and the crossties are unusable.
However, the good news is the property is as green and beautiful as ever. The winds continue to blow and the grand trees still provide shade.
The stables were built more than 50 years ago on land donated to the people of Oahu by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop in 1928. Please don't allow this beautiful cultural landmark to simply fade off into paniolo history.
