Hi,
In the news
As many of you know some time ago a person came into my bakery asking to make a Bible shaped cake with discriminatory and hateful words against the LGBT community.  I did not feel comfortable writing said message. I would gladly make the cake but would give him the tools to write the message himself.  Now that person has filed a complaint with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies against Azucar Bakery for discrimination.

At the moment I never thought this story would get so big, just that I was doing the right thing. For better or for worse the story has blown up and in order not to stick my foot in my mouth and say something that would get me into trouble, I have decided to seek legal advice.

Many of you have already offered to help; that is why this campaign was started. I will use the funds to help me and the bakery with legal expenses.

I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for your support.

With love,

Marjorie Silva

Azucar Bakery Owner

Hi,
First of all I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Sorry it took so long to answer but I have been overwhelmed by all the support and great and touching messages of encouragement. I’m excited to say that the overwhelming majority of messages have been positive. Out of more of two thousand email I only received 4 with hate.
This to me means that love wins over hate. Also, it’s very encouraging to know that this world is filled with good loving people and that we are going on the right direction. I have been labeled “pro-gay,” “anti-Christian”….etc. I’m not pro or anti anything. I just believe that we are all created equal and deserve respect and equality.
I’m sure you would like to know a little bit more about the case. At this moment DORA is still working on a judgment and will be giving a decision sometime in mid-March. No matter if I win or lose, I will feel like a winner because of all your support. Your beautiful and kind words have really touched me and my family. I also know that I did not do anything wrong. I’m also happy to report that business is booming, my employees are working overtime to fill your orders. And for that we all thank you!
With Love,
Marjorie Silva

I am Wiccan/Pagan and having me write harmful words like the ones she was asked to write would be against my religion and thus it would be religious discrimination against ME if anyone tried to force me to write them.

Looks like Rob and his little cohorts didn't think this stunt through. Probably thought Marjorie would lay down and submit. They never fathomed that a loving community, one of liberals, conservatives, Christians, and a whole bunch of other faiths and beliefs would rally around her to support her against fake Christians using a book to spew hate and hatred. It's a sad life you lead Rob, consumed with hate and trying to get validation for it.

Marjorie, I am so proud of you for your stance and how you've handled this incident. I see you've blown well past your funding goal request in less than 24 hours! To me, it seems the complaint is an open-shut case. You offered to provide the cake, along with all supplies needed for the customer to write his own discriminatory messages denigrating an minority class of citizens. You've already won. Love wins.

Rob, the recorded evidence will be thrown out. You did not tell the person you're being recorded. You did not say the cake was for a group for Christians. You simply said it was people who opposed gay marriage. That your entire premise was an insincere setup is plainly evident. At the end of the call an employee tells you that she will write down your message and pass it to the shop owner. You were not refused. Then I understand you went to the shop with a written cake design. Thats a whole other mess you made, OMG! Your comments in the shop have been reported on the web. Put it this way.... not really helping your case there Rob. And reporting another commenter to the police actually indicates to me a level of dissociation from reality. Calling his comments harassment is ludicrous in a country of free speech.

Rob Man is so funny. His antics are just so hilarious. Whatever happened to the AMERICAN muslim students at Duke University who were promised they could call fellow followers of Islam to prayer. What happened to their right to practice their religious beliefs. Oohhhh I forgot it was them fundamental Christians like yourself who thinks it's ok to deny another American that right simply because you hate Islam.

@rob man, your you tube video posted is legal gold, for Marjorie. If it is the actual recording it is not admissible evidence, the bakery must be informed they are being recorded before recording has taken place, telling them after isnt the same thing. they also must identify themselves by name, they were referred to as boss, and owner. Also there was no discrimination towards my religion presented in the video, example they didn't say i won't write that because your a christian, and i hate your religion they refused to provide you a service they didn't feel comfortable doing. believe it or not they have the right to do so, because it can cause their company present or future troubles. Writing hate crimes on a cake can get the business in legal trouble if put in the wrong hands. it wasn't because of his religion they were compliant, suggestive, and helpful. When he menitoned what he wanted to write he never said "for religious reason i need the quote the "bible said.." he asked them to write a hate crime on a cake with out mentioning it involved his religion,. first came quote than came religion. .it sounds like a set up against the bakery... Also I found this recording odd, why is it even recorded in the first place? im assuming he knows what hes doing and is going to need it for a future case against the bakery. if he does record every phone conversation, he'll need to provide evidence, not just this one tape its suspicious. he asks what kinds of cake? whats the most popular? the man didnt even know what they were putting on the cake but said "yes put that on sounds good" and as soon as she hesitated with the writing he blurts out "YOUR DISCRIMINATING, MY RELIGION, FEDERAL LAW BLAH BLAH" the bakery employee even states "I'm not being discriminating". they never directly said i don't like your religion, that would be the crime. refusing to personally write an assholes hateful words can be legally justified. i looked everything up and legally your man has NO CASE.

Jesus said "love on another as I have loved you" He did not specify straight or gay, but one another. Many of the church going Christians can be the most discriminatory and judgmental people I have ever met. I did get some weird looks at my church when I mentioned that I was volunteering for the Obama campaign. I am a Christian, I belive that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and was ressurected on the third day and is seated at the right hand of the Father to judge the living and the dead. If you are truly a Christian, you would not hate or be discriminatory to ANYONE!! End of my rant. I will pray for your soul and for God to fix your bigotry ways.

As a Denver resident, I am proudly supporting this campaign against whack job bigot Bill Jack of Castle Rock. He has NO RIGHT to force this baker to print his bigoted slanderous words attacking someone else. He is also NOT a REAL Christian. A sign shop would also correctly refuse such a request, and they have every right to. She gave him cake implements to write his own message, so she DID NOT discriminate.

We tasted a wedding cake from this bakery over 3 years ago, & have purchased 5-10 birthday and other cakes every year since. Why? Because the cakes are FANTASTIC! Before this story, we felt lucky to know about this bakery gem. Now, we feel honored to continue to support a local business that is not only one of the best in their industry but is also owned and run by a strong individual with courageous integrity. We are Christian Lesbians and feel God has blessed you with an amazing gift. Thank you for sharing it with us and for being an incredible individual, too.
