Kitten Attacked by Dog at Makapuu

Donation protected
UPDATE 9/24 5:20pm: Great news...Rusty made so much progress with the doxycycline on board that the surgeon gave him the go ahead for surgery. Here is the amazing part, the surgeon thinks that the pelvic fracture now has a good chance of healing on its own because Rusty is doing so well. We are being cautious so we will keep the donation money for the pelvic surgery just in case it is clear that he isn't healing on his own and we need to do it at a later point. If we need to refund anything leftover then we will. We are also now closing donations. Rusty's tail must come off because of the fracture and because of the bad wound. He is still fecal incontinent, but they aren't sure that he is urinary incontinent. So for now, Rusty will be in diapers. This doesn't mean that he can't or won't heal later and be able to use the litter box, but it is a possibility that he won't. He is such a sweet boy and showing us that he wants to live and is fighting. So we aren't giving up. We have started emailing rescues on the mainland who have found homes for incontinent cats to give Rusty the best chance possible at his forever home. Rusty's tail surgery is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon so we will update everyone when he gets done. Thank you for your well wishes, prayers, and continued support. ❤️

ORIGINAL POST

Today,  a Good Samaritan found a badly injured ten week old kitten at Makapuu Point. With some networking, the cat was able to get to Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital and was given an exam and x-rays.

Unfortunately, the cat appears to have been attacked by another animal and has some serious injuries that will require extensive surgery. His tail will need to be amputated, his wounds cleaned and stitched up (as they are bleeding), and multiple areas in his broken hip/pelvis that will need to be surgically repaired with pins and/or plates.

As one can imagine, this is going to be quite expensive. The low end quote is 5,500 and the high end quote (which would include repairing everything noted above) would be 7,500.

Right now, he's going home to rest, confined so he does not injure himself, and is being treated with pain meds and antibiotics. If we can raise the money, we will go forth with the surgery. We will also work on getting another opinion from another surgeon if possible. We want to make sure we do what is right for this kitten and that he will have a good quality of life.

But regardless, we will need your help. And I know this is a huge ask.

If you would prefer to donate without the 2.9% + .30 being taken out of your donation before it gets to us, please use the following methods for donation and indicate it is for "Makapuu Kitten."

New quotes. Left is for pre-surgical hospitalization and right is for surgery (minus tail amputation, as it's the least important, but we are hoping they'll be able to work with us and include it).
