I was born 30 years ago with sickle cell anemia (SS) which is an inherited genetic disorder. Normally, your red blood cells are flexible and round, moving easily through your blood vessels. In sickle cell anemia, the red blood cells become rigid and sticky and are shaped like sickles or crescent moons. Without enough red blood cells, your body can't get the oxygen it needs... to feel energized, causing fatigue.Pain develops when sickle-shaped red blood cells block blood flow through tiny blood vessels to your chest, abdomen and joints. Pain can also occur in your bones.Sickle cells can damage an organ that fights infection (spleen), leaving you more vulnerable to infections. I have endured and thrived with this chronic illness. I managed to be a successful daughter, mother and registered nurse who was her own person until i got kidney disease. My kidney failure was the result of an autoimmune disease called FSGS. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a disease in which scar tissue develops on the parts of the kidneys that filter waste from the blood (glomeruli). It developed after i had an episode of pneumonia which of course i am prone to get because i have no spleen(it was destroyed by the sickle cell). I sometimes joke that one chronic illness was not enough, GOD saw that i was handling it too well so he sent me a second illness. Ha! But i know that it is only because of his grace and mercy that i am still here today, fighting every single day. So for now i do peritoneal dialysis every single day at home because if i do not then toxins will accumulate in my body and death usually happens in 3-14 days. I have to connect myself to this machine from a tube in my stomach every single night. The good thing is that their is a registry to get a deceased kidney. Bad thing is that there are over 100000 people waiting at any one time. My best bet is a living kidney donation. That is where you come in. We all have two kidneys but really just one kidney can work great! (promise ask your doctors) Anyone with blood type O+ can donate to me.
